EFFECT OF LH ON SUPEROVULAT[ONOF SWAMPBUFFALO IN CHINA Z.K. Wang, T.G. Yu, D.Q. Yu, Z. Wang, K.H. Wang, C. Lei and Z.H. Lu£* I n s t i t u t e of Animal Husbandry Guangdon9 Academy of Asricultural Sciences 6uangzhou 510650, China * I n s t i t u t e of Animal, Science Academy of China Beijin9 100080 China Ovulation of developin9 f o l l i c l e s of buffalo is a major problem in the superstimglation. The present experiments were undertaken to determine i f the number of ovulations could be increased by addition of LH to the superovulation regimen. Eight normal cyclin9 swamp buffaloes ased 6-8 years were synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin Fz4(PG~a ; Wuzhou Medicine Factory, China) of 0.3 m9 i.m. 9iven 11 days apart. The buffaloes were then subjected to a routine superovulatory schedule beginin9 day 11 post estrus for 5 days at a dose rate of 1.4-1.4, 1-1, 0.6-0.6, 0.4-0.2, 0.2-0.2 m9 porcine FSH-OV ( I n s t i t u t e of Animal, Science Academy of China) injected i.m. twice daily. PGF~ of 0.4 m9 was injected i.m. 84 hours af t er i n i t i a t i o n of FSH treatment. A r t i f i c i a l inseminations were carried out three times durin9 estrus. Except the control 9roup, al l buffaloes were injected i.m. with porcine LH (Limbo Hormone Factory, China) of 400 iu at f i r s t insemination and slaughtered 7 to 8 days af t er injection of P6F~a. The uterine horns were flushed with m-PBS medium and the embryos collected and examined. The number of corpora lutea (CL) and anovulatory f o l l i c l e s were counted. The r esu l t s were: Hormone Injection No. of ................. Buffalo FSH PGFj& LH (mg) (mg) (IU) .

* L.F.--La,'ge F o l l i c l e (D. 0.5-1.5 cm); C.E.--Collected Embryo; T.E.-- transferable Embryo (normal morula stage). * a,b (P < 0.01), c,d (P < 0.05) , by analysis of variance. The results indicated that LH was useful to promote ovulation of superovulated swamp buffaloes. Overall, superovulatory response was s i g n i f i c a n t l y higher in buffaloes treated with LH at the time of estrus compared to controls.
