12Q EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON MYCCARDIAL METABOLISM AND STRUCTURE. M.R. Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Tajuddin, S. Kmar, M. Tariq and R. Gupta. Muslim University, Aligarh, India. Radiotherapy and radio diagnostic procedures are being used extenA large number of these prosively in clinical medicine and surgery. cedures are focussed on the chest for treatment of neoplastic conditions There is a concurrent exposure of of the lungs, breast and lymph nodes. The varying magnitudes to the heart, blood vessels and bone marrow. lesions in the cardiovascular system so far reported have been in the form In order to study the adverse effects of observations and case reports. of irradiation on cardiac metabolism and function, an experimental Biochemical parameters study in laboratory animals has been undertaken. and histopathological changes relating to myocardial radiation injury varying degrees of exposure have been studied in a pilot experiment. have been administered to the animals to evaluate short term and delayed There are no significant immediate effects after exposing a effects. BIOCHEMICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE HEART FOLLOWING BILE DUCT LIGATION (5 TC 15 DAYS). M. Tajuddin, M. Tariq, N.L. Bilgrami and S. Kumar. Faculty of Medicine,. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India. Biochemical, histological, ana ECG changes were studied on the fifth, tenth and fifteenth day after bile duct ligation in male albino rats. The biochemical parameters included serum bilirubin, free fatty acids, GOT, lactate, pyruvate and cardiac glycogen. Maximum increase in serum bilir‘ubin was noted on the 5th day after ligation; It decreased on the 10th and 15th day. However, the level on the 15th day was higher than the normal level. Other biochemical changes i.e. serum enzymes, FFA and pyruvate also showed a maximum level on the 5th day after ligation, the levels returning towards normal on the 10th and 15th days. Maximum depletion of cardiac glycogen was observed on the 5th day, coming back towards normal on the 10th and 15th days. ECG studies showed bradycardia, increase in PR and QT intfprvals and arrhythmia in a few cases. Histology showed cloudy swelling and accumulation of bilirubin in the myocardium. Maximum changes were observed.on the 5th day. The significance of recovery after 5 days is discussed.
