Ultipleat Profile cartridge the food and beverage A technological advance in the manufacturing process for filters has led to the development of Pall Ultipleat Profile cartridge filters, a new generation of tapered pore cartridge filters. The introduction of the Ultipleat Profile element to the food and beverage markets is claimed to represent a milestone as the shape of the filter industry is redefined by Palls new pleat geometry. As a result of its unique pleat configuration and proprietary tapered pore filter medium, the flow resistance of an Ultipleat Profile filter is claimed to be up to half that of a conventional pleated cartridge filter, and l/15 that of a conventional depth filter. Consequently they provide longer service life and smaller filter systems with this falter. Smaller filter systems result in lower filter operating costs and lower fluid holdup. Desalination Systems has announced a development in eMuent treatment for the textile industry. The aim is to both conserve water and to treat it effectively and efficiently. With tightening environmental restrictions, the Desal-5 nanofiltration membrane is claimed to offer a sound treatment for dyeing and finishing processes. The Desal-5 has been used in textile applications in Europe for several years, and is beginning to be used in the US as an alternative to conventional treatments. This innovative membrane product offers a cost-effective alternative, by removing colour and other organic substances from a waste stream, allowing reuse of water and salt. Handling of effluent has become a major expense and a critical issue with textile finishing and dyeing plants. With more stringent state and federal regulations, the future lies in membrane technology to protect both the environment and the bottom line. J B Thorne has introduced a radically improved version of its Polytex intermittent extractor, claimed to give greater value for money and improved efficiency. The key improvements are a more efficient shaker mechanism which is quieter in operation, and redesigned, more widely spaced filters. The wider gaps between filters mean that the new Polytex will handle a larger range of dust particles than before; it will also accept a wide range of filter media. In addition, the filter fitted as standard is even harder-wearing than previously. The new units still feature the company’s unique and internationally patented aerostatic double seal system, which is guaranteed failsafe and is available on no other dust extraction equipment. With this system, even if the seal is damaged, it is impossible for dust particles to leak through it from the contaminated zone to the clean air zone. This is becauses clean air is at all times in contact with the gap between the two seal faces, and is at a pressure greater than the contaminated air to be filtered. The new Polytex unit works in a similar way to the original model. It collects dust at source, drawing it through ducting by a powerful fan and trapping it in the filter bag system. With the extra top-mounted HEPA a total system operating efficiency of 99.997% is claimed the arrestor also acts as a failsafe mechanism in the unlikely event of failure in the primary system. Because the system is efficient, cleaned air may be vented back into the working area if desired, as an energy-saving measure.
