Energy & an Age of Limited Availability and Delimited Applicability, by Philip Sporn. Pergamon Press Ltd, Oxford, 1976. Price: £2.75 (paperback). This 'visiting professorship' lecture warns of the unprecedented energy crisis which faces the USA (and the rest of the world), thereby threatening national safety, the economy and our way of life. Professor Sporn further admonishes the Federal Energy Administration of the USA for its ineffectual plans for coping with the crisis. The book then continues with the commonly accepted list of the major opportunities for saving energy, identifies worthwhile research areas, rejects the concept of the no-growth economy, suggests a long-term national energy programme and accepts that there is no reasonable alternative to an increased use of nuclear power to satisfy our energy needs. This 44-page book represents an easy to read but expensive statement suitable for non-scientific policymakers.
