The section on turnover and elastolysis in elastic tissue emphasizes the dynamic quality of elastin which is constantly being degraded and resynthesized. Elastolytic enzymes may well explain the morphological findings of progressive lysis of elastic fibres occurring with advancing age and in certain pathological conditions. Large sections deal with the chemical structure of elastin, elastin biosynthesis and metabolism, the physical chemistry of elastin and molecular models for elastin structure and function. The lung workshop, although a short section, includes a paper on the isolation of lung alveolar wall fragments which is a particularly important step in the study of diseases of the lungs especially emphysema. The subject matter is highly specialized and the book confined to research in elastin and elastic tissue. Many questions remain unanswered and various aspects of research need stimulating. Apart from typographical errors, this is an excellent and authoritative monograph and a major contribution towards the understanding of elastic tissue. The book will be of interest to experimental pathologists, biochemists and other scientists interested in elastic tissue research. It is, however, too specialized to be of wider use. Lynette Buder
