Water-tight manhole pipe gasket Title: Bidirectional gasket having water

energizing pockets Patent number: US5997006 Date: 7 December 1999 Inventors: J A Westhoff, J A Kelly Assignee: Poly-Tec Products Inc This patent refers to a gasket used to seal an underground pipe where it enters a manhole. When the water pressure on a conventional gasket increases, the gasket becomes

less effective and may not be water-tight. Due to the shape of the gasket in this patent, an increase in water pressure tightens the gasket onto the shaft, so that the seal remains water-tight. Figure 8 shows the gasket, and how it is deflected by the pipe. The gasket consists ofTsection anchor 16, web 14, shoulders 12c and 12d, and sloping sides 12a and 12b. The gasket is deflected, so that sloping side 12a forms a considerable area in contact with the pipe. The gasket is designed so that, once installed by its anchor 16, it can be deflected in either direction. In the figure, the area between shoulder 12c and the web and is formed into pocket P. As the water pressure increases in the pocket, it presses the gasket more strongly onto the pipe.

Tecknit's website is a little ~ ...~7~':..~ unusual in appearance but easy ~ I to navigate. It has lots of information some of which is less relevant to this readership "! but browsers can find what they want via the product catalogue. Design help is also provided with a series of short application bulletins. Tecknit products which have been 'designed into thousands of highly advanced commercial and military applications including: knitted wire mesh, conductive silicone elastomers, and fabric-over-foam gaskets'.

This is more ofa webpage rather .....gs=, than a web site. However, it ................... could prove very useful if you are looking for hard-to-find gaskets, O-rings, etc. The Lansdale, PA, ........ USA, based supplier caters for obsolete, metric and standard seals and gaskets, in European sizes or Japanese sizes, U-cups, wipers, oil seals, O-ring backups. If these are unavailable, SSP,,says it can make the seals and since it is custom made - not mass produced - "tolerances are equal to or better than the original seal".

www.sandersind.com This company specialises in environmental gaskets and seals for use in tougher applications such as high strength/abrasive or chemical/ oil resistance for liquid, air and gas management seals. The website has an unusual look - graphics look much like a gasket - but has a number of information pages. While the company admits it "doesn't have a product line that you can walk into our facility and take a look at", you can read about existing products to help with your own needs.
