Chiral compounds separation Many natural and synthetic c o m p o u n d s exhibit ' h a n d e d n e s s ' so t h a t p a r t or all of t h e r e l e v a n t m o l e c u l e c a n b e s y n t h e s i s e d to give two different s t r u c t u r e s , o n e of w h i c h is a m i r r o r i m a g e of t h e other. S e p a r a t i n g t h e s e two versions, known as enantiomers, from t h e r e a c t i o n m i x t u r e (a r e c e m i c m i x t u r e ) is a classic chemical problem, since the e n a n t i o m e r s h a v e very s i m i l a r a t t r i b u t e s s u c h as m e l t i n g p o i n t , solubility and diffusion characteristics. The u s e of a chiral or 'handed" c o m p o u n d to r e a c t with o n e of t h e two e n a n t i o m e r s , followed b y t h e r e v e r s a l of t h e r e a c t i o n , is the logical w a y of c a r r y i n g o u t s u c h a s e p a r a t i o n . In this p a t e n t the chiral c o m p o u n d is s e p a r a t e d from t h e r a c e m i c mixture by a semipermeable m e m b r a n e , a n d is a s s o c i a t e d w i t h or b o n d e d to a g e l - f o r m i n g m a t e r i a l w h i c h h a s a particle size g r e a t e r t h a n t h a t of t h e m e m b r a n e pores. Rather t h a n u s e fluid b a c k w a s h i n g to c l e a n the s u r f a c e a n d p o r e s of the m e m b r a n e , a n electrical c u r r e n t is p a s s e d t h r o u g h t h e m e m b r a n e , at a voltage h i g h e n o u g h to electrolyse water. B u b b l e s of h y d r o g e n a n d oxygen a r e formed i n t h e c o n d u c t i v e l a y e r of t h e m e m b r a n e a n d also to s o m e e x t e n t i n t h e p o r e s of t h e t i t a n i u m dioxide layer, t h u s cleaning the m e m b r a n e without s u b j r e c t i n g it to r e v e r s e flow a n d to p o s s i b l e l o n g - t e r m d a m a g e .
