INTRODUCTION electron density when transferring from one chemical compound to another does not affect the nuclear charge density.
The use of Miissbauer spectroscopy for the study of the isomer-shift effect permits one to obtain valuable information on two physical quantities that cannot be measured by themselves:
Using these assumptions and bearing in mind that a change in nuclear density is connected with that of the mean-square charge radius, one may obtain the following formula for the Mossbauer shift:3
(a) difference of mean-square nuclear charge radii in the ground and excited states; (b) difference of electron charge densities inside the nucleus for two atoms in different chemical environments,
E = %brZe2(&O) - p$(O))((?)*
- (r2)).
(1)
Here 2 is the atomic number, ~5 and pg are the electron densities of two samples in different chemical environments, and (r2)* and (r2) are the mean-square nuclear charge radii in the excited and ground states, respectively. In a first crude approximation the difference in electron densities in different chemical compounds is assumed to be associated only with the different ionicities of the samples.4 In this case the electron wavefunctions and, hence, the densities p,(r) can be
These data are useful in studies of electronic structure and charge-density distribution in a nucleus.1*2 The isomer shift is usually estimated under the following assumptions: (a) the electron density p,(r) over the nuclear volume is constant and equal to p,(O); (b) nuclear charge redistribution involved in a transition from excited to ground state does not affect the electron density, and vice versa, a change in 2%

obtained by performing self-consistent field calculations for free atoms and ions. For each ns 1,2and np,, electron orbital the present table gives the electron densities at the nuclear center p,(O) and at the nuclear surface p,(R) calculated under the assumption that the nuclear charge is distributed uniformly over a sphere of radius R = 1.24 l/3 fm (A is the mass number). The electron density Pnl.i(r) = WdJ%5

the tables are given in atomic units, that is the number of electrons per a:, where a, = 0.5292 x lo+ cm. We used the following values of fundamental constants: a = (137.03604)-l,

The term VaddA has a form:
atr=Oandr=R. The electron wavefunctions were obtained by solving the relativistic Dirac-Fock equations (referred to hereinafter as DF) taking into account the finite nuclear size. Self-consistent field calculations were performed by means of our DFRAIN computer program (included now in the complex of computer programs RAINE5). The tables contain data for the 30 atomic numbers of greatest interest in the interpretation of Mossbauer experiments. Calculations were carried out for several ions with the same 2, so that the tables contain results of DF calculations for 129 neutral atoms and ions. All the data obtained in these calculations, namely the electron binding energies, the quantities lim pnlj/r21+1, r + 0, the expectation values of rn, n = -3, -2, -1, 1, 2, 4, and the total energies of the atoms and ions are recorded on magnetic tape and stored at the Data Center of LNPI. Note that the formulas presented below are in relativistic units where the electron Compton wavelength hlmc serves as a unit of length and the electron rest mass mc2 as a unit of energy. The system of two first-order coupled DF integrodifferential equations (Eqs. The functions at the first five points needed to begin integration by these formulas are calculated by means of series (14). Integration is performed up to a matching point RhlP chosen in such a way that the interval (O,R,,) contains (n - 1 - 1) nodes of the G(r). When solving the boundary problem in the (RMp,R,) region we use the orthogonal chasing method,*O employing in place of G(R,,) and F(RIIIP - 0) the values obtained by integrating (7) in the interval (O,R,,).
