THE structures of vinylidene fluoride-hexafluorinepropylene and
trifluorochloroethylenevinylidene fluoride copolymers have been investigated b y electron diffraction technique. I t has been found t h a t copolymers containing up to 7% of hexafluoropropylene units in the vinylidene fluoride chain a n d up to 16% vinylidene fluoride units in the trifluorochloroethylene chain possess crystalline structures t h a t do not differ from the corresponding homopolymers. The incorporation of over 15% of hexafluoropropylene units in the vinylidene fluoride chain and of over 25% vinylidene fluoride units in the trifluoroethylene chain leads to complete disordering of the lattice and to the formation of amorphous polymers with rubber-like properties. The cause for the amorphous nature of these copolymers is apparently the large difference in size of the substituents (chlorine atoms in the CF 3 group) and, their irregular distribution along the chain. SORPTION OF LOW MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS BY POLYMERS AT HIGH TURES
TEMPERA-
T. V. Gatovskaya, G. M. Pavlyuchenko, V. A. Berestnev and V. A. Kargin, Vysokomo]. soyed. 5: No. 7, 960-965, 1963. THE technique of measuring the high-temperature sorption of low molecular compounds b y polymers has been described. The results of such measurements permitted assessment of the chain flexibility of a number of crystalline polyolefins. I t has been shown t h a t in the series of polyolefins, polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene, flexibility of the macromolecules increases in the order given, the corresponding segment lengths being 60, 40 and 30 carbon atoms. RADICAL COPOLYMERIZATION OF m-AMINOPHENOL VINYL ETHER AND METHYL METHACRYLATE
M. F. Shostakovskii, G. G. Skvortsova and M. Ya. Samoilova, VysokomoI. s o y e d . 5: N o . 7, 9 6 6 - 9 6 8 , 1963. THE eopolymerization ofm-aminophenol vinyl ether with methyl methacrylate in the presence ofazobisisobutyronitrfle at 60d-1 ° has been carried out. I t has been found t h a t under these conditions, in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, tert-butyl peracetate or azobisisobutyronitrile, homopolymerization of the vinyl ether takes place. The ether copolymerizes with methyl methacrylate the more, the higher the concentration of the l a t t e r in the initial mixture.
