Received 1 April 1985; accepted for publication 29 April 1985 Defect rich and stoichiometric surfaces of SrTiO3(001) prepared by argon-ion bombardment and annealing in UHV or in oxygen atmosphere have been investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy, LEED and AES. Via core level shifts (Ti 3p level) surface Ti ions and Ti ions in different charge states have been identified and are set in correlation to characteristic defect-related gap states.

The H:GaAs(110) was studied by ultraviolet photoemission. The analysis of tne spectra show that hydrogen chemisorbs on both Ga and As along ideal dangling bond direction. At the same time, because of the strong H-surface interaction, the H causes the removal of As.
