Vacuum news least three weeks without the necessity of replenishing the liquid nitrogen. The vessel is constructed (with all joints glued) by the most up-to-date techniques of light alloy in combination with certain plastics specially selected for their low thermal conductivity and their proven ability to withstand low temperatures. It is, therefore, extremely light and portable, but strong and robust. It has an extrawide neck for ease of filling and emptying. Six canisters 1½ inches in diameter by 11 inches long to hold the biological material can be suspended in the vessel. An indexing plate is fitted so that each canister can be identified by number. When required for use as a normal liquid-nitrogen Dewar the six canisters and the indexing plate can be removed, revealing a specially shaped neck tube that facilitates the pouring of liquid nitrogen. Convenient 10-32 female threads in each end of the blocks (¼ × ¼ × 1 inch) are said to simplify mounting and attachment of lugs, terminals, filaments, heaters, electron sources, etc, for such uses as substrate heaters, electron-beam guns, thin-film sources, nude Bayard-Alpert ionization gauges, etc.

Kerry's W-260-TSL ultrasonic wire bonder in ultrasonic devices are automatically compensated for in the new unit. Precise regulation of the ultrasonic energy delivered to the weld area is accomplished by a manual power control, adjustable over both a high and low range. Step switches control power and weld-time to prevent their accidental range, and to provide reproducible setup adjustments. Stability of operation to ensure high reproducibility of weld quality has been the design foundation for this new welder. The welding head is available in several forms, usable in manual, semi-automatic or automatic equipment. The machine consists of a rotating ultrasonic transducer associated with a sonic converter revolving in a ball race fitted at a position of minimum vibration. Shaped diamond-impregnated cutting probes attached to the converter enable several machining operations to be carried out, such as drilling, threading, end milling, tee slotting and dovetail cutting. The first equipment to be produced by the company is the 20 W ultrasonic wire bonder, type W-260-TSL. This welder is designed to handle the smallest weldments and facilitates assembly operations in the transistor and microcircuit-device manufacturing industries. Incorporating features of larger ultrasonic welding equipment, the unit is said to have proved particularly effective in joining lead wires to diodes, rectifiers, and similar semiconductor mechanisms. The compact welder is adaptable to micropositioning equipment and is available for installation in standard wire-bonding machines. The model W-260-TSL power generator has a visual resonance indicator for proper work setup. Variables ordinarily encountered 210

Advanced test units shown by Tenney Incorporated Tenney Engineering Incorporated, designer and producer of aerospace and environmental test equipment, with headquarters in Union, N J, introduced several advanced test chambers at the Institute of Environmental Science exposition held in San Diego, California from 13 to 15 April, 1966. Featured at the Tenney exhibit was the new version of the Tenney Jr bench-model environmental chamber and the multi-range MR-1 precision temperature bath, which provides a test range from --50 ° to + 120°C, with J=0.03 °C control. Tenney also introduced for the first time its new bench-model temperature humidity chamber for environmental and military specification testing. The exhibit also included a photographic display of other Tenney test equipment in a wide range of sizes and capacities. Electrosil to manufacture microcircuits Electrosil Limited have announced that they intend to start manufacturing solid integrated circuits in Great Britain in mid-1966. Equipment has already been ordered and accommodation at their new factory in Sunderland is being modified. Automatic testing and inspection techniques will be used extensively. Automatic integrated-circuit testers will also be made available
