Correspondence EMAS position statement: Non-hormonal management of menopausal vasomotor symptoms

J. Clin. Oncol.]. I realise that this is not a systematic review but being a statement from EMAS it is likely to have considerable influence and should offer readers an accurate overview of the literature.

Dear Editor, Conflict of interest There is considerable interest in the effectiveness of nonhormonal managementof vasomotor symptoms (VMS) so the EMAS position statement [1] is welcome. However, the section on the effects of behavioural treatments for VMS does not reflect findings from recent literature. My work is quoted so I have taken the liberty of commenting on this section of the paper: 2.3. Behavioral therapies Cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, and mindfulness-based (CBBMB) therapies have been used to deal with menopausal symptoms, mainly depression [41] though evidence is limited [42]. Telephone-guided self help cognitive behavioral therapy seems to have a positive influence on menopausal symptoms [43]. Interventions that include relaxation and yoga have also been assessed for the treatment of menopausal symptoms; however the results are inconsistent [44]. The reference [41] does not link with the text—this is a mediation analysis of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for VMS not a paper on CBT for depression. For CBT for VMS only one uncontrolled study by my research group [43] is quoted, but the three randomised controlled trials that clearly show that CBT significantly reduces the impact of VMS are not referenced [Ayers et al., 2012 Menopause; Mann et al., 2012 Lancet Oncol., and Duijts et al., 2012
