Of particular interest to readers of this issue of Current Opinion in Pharmacology are Information On The Different Inborn Errors in Metabolism and the Table Common Of Vertebrate Hormones. Although most of the links are to sites for the health care professional there are a few useful educational and research sites such as links to biochemical pathways and cellular and molecular processes on the ExPasy web page, and links to various mitochondrial disorders. Endocrine Database http://www.il-st-acad-sci.org/data2.html Plasma concentrations for various hormones in humans and in animals can be found at this location.

Insulin Pumpers http://www.insulin-pumpers.org/links.shtml Although this site was designed for patients with diabetes, it has some interesting pages such as the history of insulin pumps with pictures, and a page with links to insulin-pump and diabetes information. It also contains a list of diabetes software, including software for PDAs. Diabetes in Control http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/links.htm News and information about diabetes for the medical profession is provided at this site. The homepage gives a weekly news summary of the latest information on diabetes.

Health Sciences PDA Sites, Hardin Library for Health Sciences, University of Iowa Library http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/pda/healthsci.html This is a helpful health science site for PDAs and pocket PC programs.

Hot thyroidology http://www.hotthyroidology.com/ This is a free online journal that is owned by the European Thyroid Association. Designed to keep researchers informed of the hot topics and controversies in the thyroid field, it contains editorials that discuss important developments in experimental and clinical thyroidology. It also has links to many of the endocrine societies from around the world.

Medline Plus http://medlineplus.gov/ I have found this to be an extremely useful site for finding information on drugs and specific diseases, as well as dictionaries. The dictionary section contains a ‘Multilingual Glossary of Technical and Popular Medical Terms in Eight European Languages’ as well as ‘ADAM Medical Encyclopedia’.

Thyroid Disease Manager http://www.thyroidmanager.org/thyroid_links.htm Links on the thyroid for physicians and patients can be found at this site. National Institute Of Health, Osteoporosis And Related Bone Diseases, National Resource Center http://www.osteo.org/ This site contains fact sheets, research bibliographies and links to various sites containing bone health information. Under the news section, I found recent information on biochemical markers of bone turnover and emerging osteoporosis therapies. Pituitary Disorders Education and Support (PDES) http://www.pituitarysupport.com/index.htm This site presented by PDES, a non-profit organization, is designed to provide current information on advances in the treatment of pituitary disorders. It provides basic information on the pituitary gland and its various diseases.

Hints for searching on the web Search engines I have found to be helpful Google http://www.google.com/ I found Google to be the most helpful search engine for finding many of the web sites I provided in Current Opinions in Pharmacology. The search engines listed below were helpful in finding medical sites for patients and professionals; however, they were not as helpful in finding research sites. California Digital Library http://searchlight.cdlib.org/cgi-bin/searchlight I found a number of research-related web sites using the Science and Engineering search engine. The searches take a little bit of time but in return you get books, journal articles, electronic text and documents including patents and National Science Foundation grant support information and web directories.

Other helpful sites Online Medical And Science Dictionaries http://www.medbioworld.com/advice/dict.html Links to various online dictionaries can be found here including links to medical, life science, chemical and computer dictionaries and a link to Zoological Glossaries, Dictionaries And Acronyms.

Biomedical Information Resources & Services, Karolinska Institute http://www.mic.ki.se/Other.html This site is loaded with information on specific topics but most are medical professional and not research-related.
