Expansion barrel accommodates up to 42 inches of axial movement
T
he Style W256 expansion barrel, available from US-based Victaulic Co, a manufacturer of mechanical pipejoining systems, is targeted at applications involving large-diameter water and abrasive service piping systems. According to the company, the expansion barrel, which simplifies system design and installation, and offers durable, reliable service, accommodates up to 1066.8 mm (42 inches) of in-line expansion and contraction. It simplifies system design by enabling all in-line movement to be accommodated in one location in a single unit. It eliminates the need for space-consuming, expensive expansion loops or multiple expansion compensators along the line. Standard Victaulic Style W07 AGS rigid couplings are used to join the barrel to the pipeline, easing installation. It is constructed from durable ductile iron and features redundant engineered seals for a reliable, long service life. An external coating on the inner barrel reduces the risk of seizing and adds a level of wear resistance, whilst reducing activation forces. Specially designed, integrated wipers maintain contact to shed foreign materials, reducing seal wear. The triple redundant seals eliminate the need for field maintenance required for packing glands. The Style W256 expansion barrel is available in 24-inch to 42-inch sizes (600–1050 mm), and accommodates pressures of up to 300 psi (2065 kPa). The Style W256 does not accommodate system deflection.

Engineering plastic has high strength and excellent wear resistance
H
yosung Polyketone, a new engineering plastic that has high resilience and strength, excellent chemical and wear resistance, very good hydrolysis resistance and flame retardancy, was exhibited at Chinaplas 2015, which was held earlier this year in Pazhou, Guangzhou, China.
Developed by Hyosung Corp, it is made of carbon monoxide and olefins and, says the company, possesses a unique combination of outstanding properties. Elongation at yield is over 20% and elongation at break is over 250%. Its tensile strength is similar to that of conditioned PA66, whilst its impact strength is about double that of PA66 or PBT, says the company. Other advantages of the material include its sustainable mechanical properties and dimensional stability upon moisture absorption. It also possesses excellent chemical resistance to automotive fluids, hydrocarbon solvents, salts, and weak acids and bases. The world’s first facility for mass-producing Hyosung Polyketone is currently under construction. The plant, which is located in the southern industrial part of Korea, has a capacity 50 000 metric tonne per year. Contact: Hyosung Corp, 235 Banpo-daero, Seocho-gu, Seoul, (Banpo-dong), South Korea. Ingenious moulding and sealing of connector ensures superior reliability
R
S Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents Plc, a global distributor for engineers, has identified two ingenious features of the recently launched Molex ML-XT rugged, sealed connector system that help ensure superior reliability at a highly competitive price point. The ML-XT plastic housing and seal are moulded using a one-piece design, which is not only economical, but also supremely reliable, says RS. Permanent bonding, using two-shot liquid silicone rubber (LSR) moulding technology ensures IP68-ingress resistance as well as immunity to loss or misalignment of the seal. Accurate alignment ensures repeatable retention during “unmating” and mating of the plug and receptacle. In addition, a rear seal cover prevents the loss of sealing that can occur as wires exiting conventional connectors become bent or are moved. It also prevents the cable flexing close to the seal and so maintains the perfect cableentry angle. The seal is moulded in high-consistency rubber (HCR) for superior tear resistance during terminal insertion and extraction. Additional benefits of the ML-XT system include reduced inventory, assembly time and costs, because the plug and receptacle housings
IN BRIEF Book introduces fundamentals of polymers and composites tribology Woodhead Publishing, an imprint of Elsevier, has produced a book that introduces the fundamentals of polymers and composites tribology. Entitled ‘Wear of Polymers and Composites’ (by Ahmed Abdelbary), it suggests a new approach to explore the effect of applied load and surface defects on the fatigue wear behaviour of polymers, using a new tribometer and thorough experiments. The publication discusses the effects of surface cracks, under different static and cyclic loading parameters, on wear, and presents an intelligent algorithm – in the form of a neural network – to map the relationship between wear rate and relevant factors. It says using these methods leads to more accurate and cost-effective prediction of surface fatigue wear rates, under different service conditions.
