Cartridge filters Ensuring clean propellent supplies

3M filter cartridge for oil and gas industry: CRP filter design sets the pace Designed for a variety of applications, including the oil and gas field environment in the North Sea, the 3M 7 0 0 B f i l t e r c a r t r i d g e is claimed to set a new standard by its creation of a greater surface area, to trap more unwanted dirt p a r t i c l e s than conventional cartridges currently in use. This adds to the range of air and liquid filters offered by 3M. With a history of developing filters that deliver among the highest loading capacities available, 3M has redesigned the conventional filter cartridge system, using its advanced C o m p o u n d Radical Pleat (CRP) technology for the construction. This results in a cost-effective filter which enables large areas to be packed into more workable cartridge dimensions.

Its a d v a n t a g e s i n c l u d e high dirt holding capability, more effective removal for fine particles, fewer changeouts, improved rig-time utilisation and lower filtration costs -- satisfying industrial needs for the mid-1990s. C o n v e n t i o n a l filter elements have a vertically pleated filter medium which is enclosed in a cylinder. The d e s i g n r e s u l t s in a p o o r u t i l i s a t i o n of t h e s u r f a c e area. In cOmparison, the CRP design fills the entire element with pleats that are stacked horizontally, creating a greater surface area of dirt-holding capacity (see diagram above). Independent filtration trials organised by the Orkney Water Test Centre (OWTC), to c o m p a r e t h e solids removal efficiency and differential pressure characteristics of the new filter cartridges with conventional liq u i d filter cartridges, shows that the CRP technology works better. It processed a 60% greater v o l u m e of water at a consistently h i g h e r removal level. Over the past three y e a r s , 3M has been working

A designer and manufacturer of aerosol filling machines, BWI KP Aerofill, has selected two Balston single-cartridge filters to safeguard propellent supplies to two multiple filling h e a d s used in a new carousel machine to be used for filling cans for personal care products. For safety reasons, propellent gas supplies that feed aerosol container filling machines are usually stored in bulk c o n t a i n e r s well away from the working environment, which means long runs of pipes to carry the gas to the point of operation. To ensure that impurities which may be present in the gas holding tank a n d supply pipes are not transmitted to the intricate metering pumps and filling heads, Aerofill has fitted two Balston stainlesssteel filters with DQ-grade

microfibre cartridges close to the filling heads, in order to remove any carry-over t h a t may impair performance. When the filters require their routine maintenance inspection, they are simply isolated using shutoff valves on either side of the housing. A bleed hose connection safely vents the resictue remaining in the housing. Balston speciality gas filters are capable of pressures up to 300 bar, and will deliver compressed gases at virtually any purity level. Cartridge grades are capable of removing impurities from gases to as high as 99.9999+% efficiency for 0.1 ~m solid particles and liquid droplets. Fulflo MBC for chemical applications Commercial Filters, a division of Parker Hannifin Corporation, has introduced a new line of absolute-rated depth cartridges, the polypropylene microfibre Fulflo MBC. This new product has a fl-rating of 5000 at each stated micron level, with micron ratings of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and-70. Commercial Filters uses controlled, graded fibre diameters to achieve decreasing pore size from outside to inside, giving the Fulfio MBC a long service life. The car-

tridges offer wide chemical process application possibilities, including p a i n t s and intermediates, because of its 100% polypropylene microfibre construction. It also fulfils filtration requirements for photographics, food and • beverage applications, and reverse osmosis prefiltration.

closely with two major service companies who have a prog r e s s i v e a p p r o a c h to t h e service they offer the oil and gas industry -- BW Mud of Aberdeen, Scotland and Dowell Schlumberger of Bergen, Norway. B o t h c o m p a n i e s praised the new p r o d u c t ' s s u p e r i o r l o a d i n g capacity, giving long life performance with fewer cartridges needed, as well as offering easier operator handling with less change-outs -- all culminating in lower filtration costs for the industry. Their evalua-

tions have now led to several major oil companies using 3M 700B filter cartridges. The p h o t o g r a p h shows a 700B multi-cartridge horizontal vessel.
