Diffusion of Contaminants in the Ocean, R.V. Ozmidov Kluwer Academic Publishers Group, Dordrecht 1990, 283 pp. Price: UK £89.00. Translated from the Russian version by I. Leikin. A monograph summarizing results obtained by the author and other researchers. Papers concern theoretical results combined with the data obtained from diffusion experiments with artificial tracers. Practical recommendations are given on how to compute the behaviour of contaminants in various hydrometeorological conditions. Topics covered: the elements of contaminant-diffusion theory; diffusion of contaminants from localised sources and distributed sources in the ocean; practical methods for calculating contaminant diffusion in the ocean. Useful data are provided for the Atlantic Ocean, Baltic, Black and Caspian seas and L. Baikal. Although an expensive book the mathematical presentation is balanced by field data; most references tend to be old (e.g. pre-1983) and refer to Russian publications.
