REPUBLIC OF DJIBOUTI G R A N T S EXPLORATION PERMITS The Government of the African Republic of Djibouti has granted exploration permits for seven promising exploration targets in Djibouti. The permits, which represent a critical step towards exploration in Djibouti, were granted to a joint venture of Quest International, a resources development company, and Seven Star Minerals, a privately held mineral resource development and consulting company. The permits conform to standard terms in the international mining industry. "Djibouti, which is located at the centre of three major rift systems, provides a favourable geologic environment for the discovery of major ore deposits," explained Donald Gustafson, president of Quest International.

PETROCHEMICALS BOREALIS EXPANDS SWEDISH ETHYLENE PLANT Borealis AB, the European petrochemicals company, is to invest in a capacity expansion at its ethylene plant in Stenungsund, Sweden. The project, representing an investment of approximately US$200 million, will expand the capacity of the existing complex from 400 000 to more than 600 000 metric tons of ethylene per year. The work is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 1999. The technology and basic design have been provided by Stone and Webster, and it uses the patented advanced recovery system and the USC M-coil furnace technology. Foster Wheeler France, part of the global design and construction company, Foster Wheeler Corp, will be responsible lot project engineering. This includes the detailed design of two 100 000 metric ton per year ethylene heaters and associated equipment. Robert Onsander, managing director of the Borealis Swedish facility, said: "The expansion of the Stenungsund cracker fits very well with our long term strategy and represents a major step in an expansion program, designed to make the Stenungsund site Borealis' first world scale petrochemicals site."
