the blood supply as well as skin innervation must be assessed using clinical judgment and/or procedures such as the ankle:brachial pressure index. Assessment data may reveal a number of points which need following through. For example, although relief from mechanical stress is found to be required, the patient's dietary intake may also need closer investigation and they would be referred then to the nutritionist, perhaps via the GP. Contributions to the Journal ofTissue Viability fromPAM' s illustrating their scope ofpractice in relation to wound and ulcer management as well as in prevention would be useful so that other disciplines may be more informed and send patients in the appropriate direction. It is helpful to have quantifiable data to aid diagnosis and monitor progress. Clinicians look to appropriate professions to conceive and develop suitable instrumentation which can be

Errata January issue. 1. Maintaining Nutritional Support in the Community. Ms Oliver has asked us to point out that about 256 patients in Britain receive parental nutrition at home for reasons of malabsorbtion or gastrointestinal disease. The statement added by the Editor to her article (page 30) that this method is properly used with in-patients is therefore incorrect.

made readily available i.e instruments must be cheap, portable, provide accurate, consistent and rapid results in a clinical setting. Although the potential for ulceration may be suspected clinically because of salient clinical features and past history, detection of sub-clinical tissue breakdown would mean that preventative measures could be started early, The detection of sub-clinical changes would be reliant on suitable instrumentation such as ultrasound imaging of the skin. However other techniques must exist which are in the domain of medical electronics, physics etc. and may remain unknown to clinicians of all disciplines. The TVS is one forum where clinicians can make their needs and aspirations known to those who have the academic and technical expertise enabling advancement in wound treatment and prevention.

2. Death due to a Pressure Sore. Was the Coroner's verdict 'Lack of Care Justified?' Dr Mary Bliss states that the disclaimer published is not true. 'This was a factual report of a particular case and permission had been obtained from relatives for publication. The whole point of publishing is lost if it is considered to be fictitious, as the aim was to provide a prima facie case for consideration by lawyers, doctors or nurses, patients or their relatives contemplating similar cases in the future. The resemblance to persons and institutions is not coincidental and I do not wish to give any other impression.'
