It has come to our notice that we had been misinformed about the grade of the material we investigated in this study. In our paper it is written GUR 1020, which is a calcium stearate free grade of UHMWPE. However, we have now been informed that

it was in fact GUR 1120, which does contain calcium stearate. In our article we stated that fusion defects such as shown in Fig. 1 cannot be due to calcium stearate since this is not present. This conclusion thus has no foundation, but the new information does not change any of our other conclusions in the article. Some authors have ascribed to calcium stearate the property of being a possible source for fusion defects, but this matter is still unclear as described in the excellent review by Kurtz et al. [1]. We have seen the same type of fusion defects as shown in Fig. 1 also in materials that we are sure are calcium

stearate free UHMWPE, see Fig. 2. The fusion defects are found in materials from multiple converting sources, and work is ongoing to understand how the state of the art has changed these results over time. We are very sorry if our mistake has misled the readers.
