The 11th ESPEN Congress was held in Helsinki on September 9-14 1989 under the presidency of Dr Jukka Takala. The meeting was most successful on both scientific and social level, there being more than 1400 participants from all over Europe, as well as many from further afield. The meeting commenced with a tribute by Professor John Kinney to Sir David Cuthbertson, who died on 15th April 1989. The Sir David Cuthbertson lecture was given by Professor J. W. Alexander on the subject ‘Nutrition in Sepsis’, and the Arvid Wretlind lecture was given by Dr J. Millward on the subject ‘Hormonal Regulation of Protein Turnover’. There were four symposia, one workshop and curriculum session, together with 94 oral and 147 poster research communications which had been selected from over 400 submitted. In addition, there was a large exhibition of nutritional products which was generously supported by industry members. At the Congress, the following ESPEN awards were announced for 1989.
