Hosokawa Mikropul (HK), a division of Hosokawa Micron Ltd, has recently supplied, installed and commissioned a new zinc oxide product collection plant at Union Miniere Oxyde’s plant in Barking, Essex, UK. HK has said that the plant was installed in just one week to avoid excessive plant shutdown. U.M. Oxyde’s requirement was to replace an existing large open sock type filter, which was giving some emission problems into the factory, with a new bag filter and collection system. HK came up with a complete new system to take the zinc oxide from a furnace into a new cylindrical reverse jet bag filter, model 37-8-l 00 Low top removal with special tangential inlet section. HK also supplied and installed a new suction fan to convert the system from positive to negative pressure; a product collection equipment; a ducting including a new stack: and a buffer storage hopper with valve and level probe for U.M. Oxyde’s bagging station. All equipment had to be installed on the first floor and had to be manufactured in pieces small enough to be lifted in a caged lift and assembled at the point of installation. Pall and Coors joint ventute Pall-Pass US, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pall Corp., and Coors Ceramics Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of ACX Technologies, Inc, have announced the formation of PCC Enterprises, LLC, a 50/50 joint venture to manufacture high tech inorganic membranes using classified information from the US DOE. These products are intended to be integrated into elements, assemblies and systems for sale into the filtration/membrane markets. It is reported that PCC Enterprises plans to licence Department of Energy (DOE) technology to manufacture these membranes. Ongoing development of these products is taking place under several Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA’s) which are separately sponsored by Pall and Coors Ceramics. PCC Enterprises will be the first company to commercially manufacture and sell inorganic membrane products equipment and using processes which are still considered classified by the DOE. According to Pall, the new membranes, which will begin hitting the market by late 1998, are based on DOE technology used to separate uranium isotopes for weapons and nuclear power. Coors and Pall have thus far entered into seven CRADA’s (Co-operative Research and Development Agreements) with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN) on applying the inorganic membrane technology to key filtration markets, and this joint venture affirms the
two companies’ interest in pursuing high-end filtration markets. Speaking to a group of New York securities analysts on March 3, Pall CEO Eric Krasnoff described the Oak Ridge membranes as a “brilliant development” and outlined PCC’s plans to commercialise the membranes by application and market. The first application will be porous metal filtration tubes, described as at least a US$l billion market. Krasnoff expects products from this program to reach commercialization by late 1998. In addition, reverse osmosis membranes for ultra-pure water, a US$250 million market, should be ready for sale by late 1999. In all, markets covered by the seven CRADA’s, which PCC will pursue, total US$2.6 billion per year. PCC Enterprises also plans to play a role in the DOE efforts to industrialise some US government facilities. The company intends to lease a portion of the DOE facilities in the East Technology Tennessee Park, Oak Ridge, TN through the Community Reuse Organisation of East Tennessee. Esso awards contract to Cobham UK company Alan Cobham Engineering Ltd, has been awarded a contract from Esso Petroleum to supply two pipeline filtration systems at their plant at Fawley, UK. The package includes a combination of hydrocyclones and special filters as the flow rate of the pipelines
is beyond the practical limit of single stage pleated media filters. Cobham states that the skid-mounted units are designed to remove solid particulates from a range of hydrocarbons, gasoline, kerosene and gas oil at flow rates of up to 959 m3/hr. They will protect
downstream pumping and separation equipment and will be installed between product storage tanks and main pipeline transmission systems. Alan Cobham says it has pioneered the use of hydrocyclones to extend the life of pleated media filter cartridges, and this
