ESTABLISHBENT ANDDEVELOPMENT OF IRRADIATION TECRNOLOGY INDUSTRY IN SHENZEEN Lu Shou-yi China Shenzhen Irradiation Center Shenzhen, Guangdong, China

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the establishrent and development of radiation processing-the new technology industry in Shenzhen special economic zone, China, from importing a complete set of irradiation equipment to establishing an industrial system of irradiation commercialization. Through the organization of irradiation production, the products, ,the safety operation of the equipment, the development of irradiation pioneering of technical markets, the increase of economic benefit and the reveal of social benefit, the irradiation technology industry in Shenzhen has formed a productive capacity of 1 nillion curies of Cobalt-60 just in a few years. This shows a bright future of the new technical industry. This paper also points out that the radiation sterilization is a ripe and practical technology in the present irradiation technology industry. The academic circles and industrial circles in the world now should closely cooperate to sake the superior sterilization technology convinced by the public. The appropriate administrative measures should be taken to make it extended and popularized. This not only increases the level of social Medical health, but also urges the irradiation technology to have an outstanding development in commercialization. KEYWORDS Industrial

INTRODUCTION China Shenzhen Irradiation Center has been established with the development of Shenzhen special economic zone. In 1983, after a demostration, a group of experts and professors drew a conclusion that economically, technically and safely to build radiation technology industry in Shenzhen is feasible. In such a case, in order to quickly catch up with modern developing radiation processing technology, and to accelerate the developlent of Shenzhen industry, we iMported a complete set of modern irradiator from Canada in 1966, and then have built a base of radiation technology industry. In consideration of our actual situation, during the importation, we had raised some technical design requirements to the supplier. For example, require a bigger and multifunctional facility suitable for various radiation products and with design loading capacity of 4 MCiCobalt-60; packing density should be UP to l.0g/cr3; adopt double-source rack system and incremental dose system for extending the obsorhed dosage of products; enlarge the volume in each product carrier to 1. 913; there should be a operating capability over 8000 hours/year and provide a computer monitoring system. According to the ideas, a couercial automatical irradiator has been set up in Shenzhen city in the late of 1986, which at that time filled in a gap for our country 473

Fig.1 shows the layout of the irradiator.

In fact, it was the first time that the irradiator was imported in China. During construction, we fully made use of the basic technology in Chinese nuclear industry, On the base of and now have mastered its technical functions and operation features. relative standards and regulations hone and abroad, we have set UP an operating aachanism to assure product qualities and quantities during irradiation processing. In recent 5 years, the capacity of loaded source has been expanded from 300 kCi to 1MCi in total, which indicates we are entering the ranks of big irradiation facility. In safety management of radiation dosage, we strickly follow operating regulation, keep the machine running safely and reliably, and strickly implement national laws and standards concerning personal’s radiation protection. There is a special unit responsible for the job of safety protection in our irradiation center. We submit statistic reports to government departments periodically, and place ourselves under safety the supervision of the departments concerned. Even though a series reliable interlock control systems have been taken in the equipment, managing personnel still strengthen their safety job by training and supervision to workers. The safety production, as a whole, has been kept for years. To ensure product quality to reach national and international standards, a full-time personal is appointed to be in charge of the inspection. Through going by the regulations and the standards during irradiation production, and after telling related clients how to handle their products in initial productive condition in accordance all products we have processed have come UP with GNP(Good Manufacturing Practices), to quality standars. In 1991 we obtained a register for FDAof U.S.A.. Wehave mastered how to run and control the large irradiator, still, it is a hard job to us to develop irradiation product market, a special field. In order to speed UP developing irradiation technology industry, we made use of various avenues and ways to popularize the technologic knowledge to the trades and clients. As a result of many of them have recognized its features and good points, and have been efforts, willing to take it as an advanced means in processing their products. extended. Now the facility has come to corresponding level of 1HCi. Among these products we process recently, medical products are taken as leading productsThis applied disposable medical products, related packing materials and containers. field has a broad market prospect. The key is whether the manufacturers understand it and take it as a method of sterilization. In addition, we also modify the property of chemical materials with gammaray. Using the large irradiator with powerful Cobalt source for improving the condition of material modification, we can get a high rate of qualified products, cutting down the production costs.

It must be pointed out that the establishment, the development and today’s scale of Shenzhen irradiation technology industry is a reflection of the achievements of Chinese radiation technology research. The achievements have caused oversea scholars’ a base that enable us to quicken Shenzhen attention for many years. It is still industrilization. irradiation technology Through the practice in developing people have recognized gradually that irradiation irradiation technology industry, technology is a riper technology on sterilization, which is proved by an analysis with the rising scope of the quantities we have processed over the years (see Fig.2). Taking the output of 1987 as the base, Fig.2 shows the ratio of increase in irradiated product volume. As international organizations have issued more comprehensive technical regulations on the irradiation of medical sterilization, it is a certainty that it provides a condition of medical sterilization at present to spread the technology overall. It is suggested that related trade organizations together with research institutions and manufacturers, under the government’s support and by means of varies channels, make the scientific method of irradiation sterilization generally recognized. On the other hand, some questions are still waiting to solve in spreading the application, such as how to set up operation mechanism with new sterilization method in hospital; how to conpet with gas and heat; how to reduce irradiation costs etc.. Even so, there will be a great breakthrough in the application after all because of its distinctive advantage. To sum up, the development of Shenzhen irradiation technology industry indicates that irradiation technology is one of active and high-new technology field. It is growing UP, permeating into all related trades and branches, and will be paid attention to and be accepted by more and more people. With constant expansion, close connection and irradiation technology will surely play the role economic structures and social living standard, economic benefit. Wehave a full confidence on its
