Esthetic consideration of a labial bar major connector Izharul H a q u e Ansari, BDS, MDS a Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan The labial bar major connector has a limited application; however, in the infrequent cases when it is indicated, there may be no feasible alternative.1 Where esthetics is of prime importance, it might not be appreciated by the patient even if the labial bar is properly designed to satisfy all other essential requirements. The following procedure improves the appearance of a labial bar major connector by using visible light-cured (VLC) denture base resin (Triad, Dentsply International Inc., York, Pa.). 2-5

PROCEDURE 1. Cast the partial denture framework with a mesh-type labial bar, with 0.5 mm relief in the usual manner (Fig. 1, A and B). 2. Finish and polish the framework and process the denture bases. 3. Sandblast only the mesh portion of the labial bar to enhance retention of the pink opaque material (to be applied in step 5). ~Assistant Professor, Department of Prosthodontics. 4. Rinse the labial b a r i n water, place it i n a n ultrasonic cleaner in acetone solution for 3 minutes, then remove a n d dry it. Do not permit the processed acrylic resin d e n t u r e bases to contact the acetone. 5. P a i n t a t h i n coat of a pink opaque (vinyl opaquer pink No. 3527-13, Howmedica, Inc., Chicago, Ill.) over the entire labial surface of mesh labial b a r to prevent the metal from showing through the VLC resin. 6. Allow the pink opaque to dry. 7. Place some VLC d e n t u r e base resin with a drop or two of monomer liquid around the mesh labial bar and seat the removable partial denture (RPD) framework in the mouth; press a n d move the lower lip against the material to establish the proper contour as it flows. 8. Position a hand-held visible-light source over the resin for 1 m i n u t e to obtain a n initial setting in the mouth. 9. Remove the RPD, apply a coating of Triad air-barrier liquid to the VLC resin material, place it in the laboratory light-curing unit, and cure for 10 minutes. 10. Finish the resin to the cervical margins of the anterior teeth following the contour of the gingival margins, carve the labial surface with a carbide bur, and stipple it to enhance the appearance (Fig. 1, C and D, and Fig. 2).
11. Make slight relief of gingival m a r g i n s with slowsetting stone; relieve the side of the VLC resin approximately 0.25 m m (Fig. 1, C). 12. Polish a n d insert the denture. This veneered mesh labial b a r will not be as obvious as a polished metal bar (Fig. 2).
