T H E PRESIDENTS D octor Shira, of Boston, becam e the 112th president of the A ssociation at the 1975 m eeting in Chicago. T h e m eeting was held concurrently w ith the 63rd W orld D en­ tal Congress of the Federation Dentaire Internationale. D octor Shira was dean an d professor of oral surgery at T u fts U niversity School of D ental Medicine. Previously he was assistant surgeon general, an d chief of the Army D ental Corps, w ith the ran k of m ajor general. H e served as p resid en t of the A m erican Society of O ral Surgeons, A m erican Board of O ral Surgery, an d the C anal Zone D ental A ssociation, editor of the jo u rn a l Oral Surgery, Oral M edicine and Oral P athology, an d chairm an of the ADA C ouncil on D ental T herapeutics. H e was a lecturer and clinician at dental m eetings in all 50 states an d at least 24 foreign countries, an d he was a prolific au th o r of dental articles. Doctor Shira received the A ssociation’s highest aw ard, the D istinguished Service Award, in 1977. H e was born in P ennsylvania in 1910. G eneralissim o Francisco Franco, dictator of Spain for 36 years, died Nov 20, 1975, an d was succeeded by K ing Ju a n Carlos I. President Ford agreed to provide federal loans to New York City to ease its financial crisis. A Senate com m ittee revealed th a t Lockheed Aircraft C orporation had paid $22 m illio n in bribes to sell aircraft abroad. British an d French supersonic Concorde passenger liners flew from L o n d o n an d P aris to W ashington in less than 4 hours.
