[lrltl IrlITERIFIIRTIOnRIL nwsJ meeting which will be on the implications of introducing automatic nondestructive testing. SONDE is to amalgamate with the NDT Society to form the British Institute of NDT. SONDE members pay their subscription to the new institute from the beginning of this year and the executive committee has decided to press ahead with amalgamation as quickly as possible. The British x-ray products division of an American multinational company is moving from Hertfordshire to Buckinghamshire. The division, Field Emission, moved from Hitchin to the Wokingham premises of Hewlett Packard Ltd in N.ovember. The management of the division, which was taken over by Hewlett Packard not long ago, remains the same. Hewlett Packard says the move will allow for the continued expansion of Field Emission which supplies x-ray systems and radiation sources for science medicine and industry. Hewlett Packard Ltd, King

The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) is to pay for work to develop ultrasonic holography at Harwell. The grant of £74 000 for three years is towards the cost of a study to assess defects in thick steel sections. E. E. Aldridge is to lead the work at the electronics and applied physics division in the NDT Centre at Harwell. This is the first such grant Harwell has received from the ECSC. A spokesman for the U K A E A says that it is important to know the precise size, shape and location of any defects inside thick sections of steel and then to assess the effect on the lifetime performance of the components. The Harwell team has already carried on research on holography for some time. The team has holographed a defective rotor forging at a steelmill in the North of England. (Fig.5). The forging was inspected in the works as part of a contract for the CEGB. Inspectors scan the test piece on site and tape record the results for processing into holograms elsewhere. NDT

Roy Sharpe -- Croxson lecturer

Sharpe claimed he could detect a cer•tain dissillusion in acoustic emission to illustrate his views. The lecture which was a warmly received, ended with a look at news of what is required in ndt and what is and may be developed. The Croxson memorial lecture is held every two years.

British firm meets the railmen

Over 100 delegates met last autumn at a French seaside resort for a conference on railways organized by a British ndt company. Speakers invited by Brent Chemical International Ltd discussed inspection on British and French railways at Deauville in September. Other topics included research and standardization for ndt on the railways. The conference also marked the hundred and fiftieth year of the passenger train and shared the bill with an exhibition of testing and other equipment. Brent Chemicals International Ltd makes chemical products for magnetic-particle testing as well as cleansing and other specialized chemicals.

Seniors to discuss automation The Society of Non-Destructive Examination, (SONDE) is to meet on 8 - 9 April this year for its spring
