Additives for Polymers
January 1991
West Germany has the largest share of the markets for all materials with an overall take-up of 22.5% followed, on aggregate, by France with 13.5% and Italy with 11.3%. Frost & Sullivan research also shows an enormous market for kaolin, talc and calcium carbonate for paper manufacturing in Scandinavia and substantial trading of these materials between European countries. The report (E1340) costs $5,750 and is available from: Frost & Sullivan Ltd., Sullivan House, 4 Grosvenor Gardens, LONDON, SW1 W ODH, UK. European market for plastics masterbatches
Plastics masterbatches producers seeking a site for a new European plant should look carefully at West Germany, says a report from Frost & Sullivan. In a new report on the European market for plastics masterbatches, Frost & Sullivan say that West Germany imports 19,000 tons or almost a third of its consumption at the moment. Consumption is predicted to rise from 65,000 tons to 75,000 tens by 1994. “One should keep in mind”, says a report, “that West Germany is dominated by Hoechst and BASF, who both have plants in other parts of Europe, so that ‘imports’ are taking place from ‘sister’ companies. However, when German re-unification takes place, it would appear to be the right country as a logical place, as the West German D. Mark will be the common currency.” While the report forecasts “steady” growth from 1989 to 1994 in the market in Western Europe - with consumption rising from 355,000 to 407,000 tons - a question mark still hangs over the export possibilities to eastern Europe. If East Germany and other eastern bloc countries open their frontiers to Western consumer durables then the industry’s prospects could “blossom” in the next one or two years, it adds. Other areas which the report identifies as ripe for new plants are Scandanavia, which imports 11,000 tons or 45% of consumption, and Italy, which imports 2,000 tons or 4% of consumption.

Additives for Polymers
January 1991
Among the different types of masterbatches, growth prospects are marginally best among additive masterbatches, which are expected to be worth $21Om by 1994 compared to $165m in 1989. White masterbatches (up from $280m to $35&n) and black masterbatches (up from $12Om to $15Om) will be close behind, growth is expected to be lowest in coloured masterbatches, rising from $46Om to $55Om. The report notes the dominance of the market held by the top ten producers, seven of which are multinationals. Operating from 30 separate sites in Western Europe, they account for 65% of total production. The price of the report, reference E1367, is $5,750. information, contact:-
