Additives for Polymers

ered as a follow-up to the measurement methodology developed previously by the Consensus Group in The Netherlands. This group was under the chairmanship of the National Institute for Public Health and Environmental Protection, RIVN, and is an advisory institute sponsored by the Ministries of the Environment and Public Health. Also in the Group were the Consumer League, the Public Health Ministry and the industries concerned. The Dutch decision puts into place another piece of the elaborate ‘jig-saw’ of global regulation of plasticizers which, a year ago, was moving towards a total ban on phthalates as PVC plasticizers (which many have viewed as a disguised continuation of a long-running attack on PVC itself). Other pieces of the jig-saw are: A decision by a top-level US Committee that phthalates were more beneficial than harmful. in applications such as medical products (Additives, for Polymers, August 1999); The development of a potentially reliable test method by the UK Laboratory of the Government Chemist, which has now been validated (see page 12).
