Mail Drop 80, Research Triangle Park, NC, USA 27711 Simulations of visual range for locations in the eastern United States using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system of EPA are compared with observed values. The CMAQ model is a three-dimensional Eulerian model which includes the Carbon Bond (CBIV) photochemical mechanism, aqueous chemistry within clouds, and a modal representation of aerosol particles. The modal representation has two modes (Aitken and accumulation) for PM2.5 and a single mode for PM10. This version predicts the number, surface area, and species mass for the Aitken and accumulation modes, and number and species mass for PM10. The visual range variable used is the deciview. The evaluation is made for local noon observations during July 1995.
