Evode puts f 1.5m into thermoplastic elastomers Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounder Evode Plastics, UK, has announced a E1.5 million investment programme extending its present 20,000 tonnes/year capacity, and its range of materials. Central is installation of new compounding equipment - a MARIS TM70W twin-screw compounder with state-of-the-art control and data logging systems. Polymer compounding accounts for El20 million of the parent Laporte group turnover of nearly fl billion. The company’s range is currently based on styrenic TPEs, PVC and PVC alloys but there is increasing involvement in polyolefms and thermoplastic olefin elastomers. Recent developments have included introduction of low-smoke, zero halogen grades for the cable industry (under the name Smokeguard). Evode is also the approved UK compounder for Shell’s :Kraton TPEs. TECHNICAL

BRIEFS

Restabilization of recycled plastics The residual content of stabilizers in aged recycled polymers is often insufficient for effective protection during reprocessing and subsequent new application. Restabilization enables the re-use of recycled plastics for high-value products. Conventional antioxidants, UV absorbers, photoantioxidants and heat stabilizers are effective additives on the basis of cost requirements. One-pack concentrates of additives, containing costabilizers as well, keep the appropriate ratio of stabilizing components and minimize the danger of inhomogeneity in the system recycled polymer/stabilizer during processing. from recycled plastics Restabilized polyolefii, PP/EPDM, styrenics, PET, PVC or their post-consumer mixtures have been successfully used for production (according to the raw material) of drainage pipes, garden furniture and decorative objects, fence poles, bottle crates, automotive parts, flower pots, traffic cones, battery cases, bottles, car bumpers, floor coverings, roofing sheets or window profiles. Microencapsulated for polymers

antioxidants

This paper considers the possibility of stabilizing a polymer by using a lowmobile and soluble molecular-weight, antioxidant, trapped in a small volume fraction of encapsulant which releases it into the surrounding polymer to compensate for consumption or loss. Two models are discussed. In the ‘matrix’ model, the additive is dissolved in an encapsulant and its release
