NEWS for use in piping systems that carry gas and it meets KTW (Kunststoffe im Trinkwasser or ‘plastics in drinking-water’) guidelines set out by the Federal Environment Agency for materials in contact with potable water. The product stops threads from working loose and prevents leakages caused by vibration or an impact. In addition, it provides lasting protection against corrosion. The sealant cures quickly, providing a low-pressure seal between the threaded piping parts. Henkel says that its sealants, which are developed for industrial applications, offer many advantages over conventional sealants such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape, hemp or paste. They are one-component, solvent-free, gap-filling products with optimal flow behaviour. Combined, these features ensure long-term sealing performance even under severe vibration, chemical attack or thermal fluctuations. Seals keep blowmoulding machines running longer

S

eals from Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Germany GmbH are being used by a manufacturer of packaging systems, based in China, to keep its blow-moulding machines running longer. Guangzhou Tech-Long Packing Machine Co Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle blowmoulding machines in the country, needed a sealing system for the dispenser located in the centre of a blow-moulding system, the core part of the machine where failure can lead to high costs caused by lost production time. To achieve optimum performance, Turcon, a compound based on polytetrafluoroethylene, was used. A number of seals were specified, including a custom Turcon Roto Glyd Ring, with a pressure-relieving function. The sealing system within the dispenser needed to operate continuously for 16–20 hours per day at 1–4 MPa (145–580 psi) dry air pressure, at rotational speeds of 150 mm/s. Dry air is a difficult medium to seal, says Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. To do this suc4

cessfully the seal must initially demonstrate a smooth and tight dynamic sealing surface after a short run-in. It then must have outstanding wear resistance under poorly lubricated conditions. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions’ sealing configurations are now being used in Tech-Long PET bottle blow-moulding machines that are in operation in many countries around the world. Evonik builds plant for materials used in sealants and adhesives

E

vonik Industries Ag is building a plant in Marl, Germany, for producing functionalised polybutadiene. This liquid polybutadiene (HTPB) is used primarily in sealing compounds for insulating glass windows and in adhesives for use in the automotive industry. This plant, which is scheduled to come on stream during autumn in 2012, will enable the firm to offer hydroxyl-functionalised polybutadiene for the first time to its customers in the sealant and adhesives industries. Evonik will market HTPB as Polyvest HT. Dr Thomas Haeberle, the member of Evonik’s executive board who is responsible for the resource efficiency segment, commented: ‘We want to strengthen our position as a solution provider for sustainable products for the adhesives and sealant industries. The demand for products that help use resources more efficiently is high.’ ‘Double-pane and triple-pane glazing in window construction, for which hydroxylfunctionalised polybutadiene is used in sealing

NEWS compounds, improves insulation in buildings.’ Evonik is already a notable manufacturer of liquid unfunctionalised polybutadienes. Dr Ulrich Küsthardt, who is the head of the firm’s coatings and additives business unit, added: ‘Thanks to our several years’ worth of experience in producing polybutadiene and our proximity to customers in the adhesives and sealants markets, we think the chances are good for successfully entering the HTPB market.’ By investing in this plant Evonik is expanding its existing service range of polyesters, polymethacrylates, amorphous poly-alphaolefins and liquid butadienes that it offers the sealant and adhesive industries. ASC and ASTM aim to define sustainability within the adhesive and sealant markets

I

n the USA, the Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) is working with standards organisation ASTM International to define sustainability via consensusdriven industry dialogue. This effort is a direct outcome of the council’s first-ever Sustainability Summit, held during July in Rosemont, Illinois. The summit was produced in partnership with ASTM and drew 86 attendees from across the sealants and adhesives supply chain. It featured keynote speakers, market segment panels and industry discussion groups that focused on one key industry trend – sustainability. ‘The goal of the council’s Sustainability Summit was to create industry dialogue, followed by action-oriented next steps,’ said Steve Duren, Director of Membership, ASC. ‘The sessions explored all facets of sustainability and provided ample opportunity for discussion and debate as the industry collaborates to establish base-line understanding of what sustainability is all about.’ The event featured an opening session where Dr Bob Peoples of the Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) shared business perspectives on green chemistry and forecasted the opportunity for industry growth in this area through to 2020. ‘Global chemical industry leaders recognise the fundamental shift beginning to take place as we move towards a sustainable bio-based enter-

prise in the 21st century,’ noted Dr Peoples. ‘The ASC membership is among the early adopters and will be well rewarded for their strategic thinking.’ The core of the summit featured three industry-oriented panels which included a total of 16 industry experts who shared thoughts and ideas on how sustainability impacted the transportation, building and construction, and packaging market sectors. ‘The panels enabled industry leaders to share knowledge and perspectives on the future direction they feel sustainability will take,’ added Duren. ‘They set up the discussion sessions that followed – where all of the attendees could debate the future of sustainability in smaller break-out groups and begin to form a reasonable action plan for industry using both ASC and ASTM platforms to implement initiatives.’ One key feature of the summit was its focus on the international nature of sustainability. Dr Hermann Onusseit of Henkel provided a European perspective as a keynote speaker. His remarks were on behalf of FEICA (Fédération Européenne des Industries de Colles et Adhésifs), the leading European trade association serving the sealant and adhesives sector. Dr Onusseit clearly identified that sealants and adhesives are “enablers” of value and a key element to any assembly or finished good. He emphasised the need for harmonisation with data, terminology and stressed the importance of standard alignment. Dr Onusseit recognised that environmental product declarations (EPDs) will be the trend of the future in the area of sustainability. ‘The ASC Sustainability Summit was the very beginning of a roadmap that will help deliver value to ASC members and the industry at large,’ noted Glenn Frommer, President, ADCO Products Inc and Chairman, ASC. ‘I was impressed with the speakers and discussions, but also the focus on action, where it was clearly expected that, working together, ASC/ ASTM will advance the sustainability dialogue and focus on definitions and terminology.’ The primary outcome of the summit was a desire on the part of attendees to focus time and effort on industry definitions for sustainability. As Ken Yarosh, who is the global service line manager for the speciality chemicals business centre at Dow Corning Corp, and Chairman of ASTM C24 for Seals and Sealants, put it: ‘The Sustainability Summit was a highly informative round table of key industry stakeholders that will help to shape terminology and standards development in the ASTM C24 Committee on Building Seals and Sealants for years to come.’ Contacts: The Adhesive and Sealant Council Inc, 7101 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 990, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA.
