Nursing Programs Reject Qualified Applicants

D

espite a significant increase in the number of enrollments in US nursing programs, nursing schools rejected more than 147,000 qualified applicants in 2005, according to a Dec 9, 2005, news release from the National League for Nursing (NLN). The preliminary report from the NLN indicates that the percentage of admissions to, enrollments in, and graduations from all prelicensure RN programs has increased. The number of qualified nurses available to teach in these programs continues to decline,

however, resulting in a large number of potential nursing students awaiting placement in US nursing programs. Despite Encouraging Trends Suggested by the NLN’s Comprehensive Survey of All Nursing Programs, Large Numbers of Qualified Applications Continue to be Turned Down (news release, New York: National League for Nursing, Dec 9, 2005) http://www.nln.org/newsreleases /nedsdec05.pdf (accessed 5 Jan 2006).
