Call for papers for the Sixth Congress of the lEA The Sixth Congress of the International Ergonomics Association will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA, 1 1 - 1 6 July, 1976. The Human Factors Society will be host to the Congress, and the theme is "Old World, New World, One World". Held in the USA's bicentenary year, it will be the first occasion that the Congress has been held outside Europe. Programme topics will include: Transportation and Communication

Presentations may also address problems such as: (a) The social, legal, ethical and environmental issues in systems design. (b) Should ergonomics be reorientated to cope with the problems of the world? (c) How can ergonomics help with the current crises in the world? (d) Ergonomics and job simplification versus job enrichment. The Technical Programme of the Congress will consist of three types of presentation: 1. Invited papers to be presented to the plenary sessions of the Congress. 2. Formal papers, symposia and workshops to be presented to smaller groups according to subject matter. 3. Presentations to be given at a continuously operating"Ergonomic Hyde Park Corner". This will consist of concurrent informal presentations that will be given in a street meeting atmosphere at a location convenient to the display area and other meeting rooms. Technical, historical, professional, administrative and any other topics of interest to the ergonomic/human factors discipline will be presented. Flip charts and portable viewing devices will enhance the give and take between speakers and audience. Time on the "Corner" will be scheduled before the Congress on a first-come first-served basis and the schedule of speakers and topics will be listed in the printed programme of the Congress. Questions or recommendations for the

By this call for papers, participation in the technical programme of the Congress is solicited in two areas: 1. F o r m a l t e c h n i c a l s e s s i o n s - (See subparagraph 2 above). This will consist of technical paper sessions, symposia and workshops. Anyone wishing to present a paper is requested to submit a 300 word abstract by 30 September 1975 to: Dr Thomas B. Malone, Chairman, Technical Sessions, Sixth Congress IEA, Essex Corporation, 201 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314, USA. Anyone wishing to develop and chair a technical paper session or to present a symposium or workshop should submit a brief description of the session (including topic, sub-topics, and proposed participants) to Dr Malone by 31 August 1975.

A registration fee will be required. Because of the past popularity of this workshop series and the limited number of participants which can be accommodated, pre-registration is strongly advised. Mat protection for computer laboratory

Atlas Computer Laboratory at Chilton have recently switched to protecting their computer rooms from foot-borne dust with the Protect-A-Mat developed by Dycem Plastics Ltd, Minto Rd, Bristol. Human Factors Workshop on Highway Transportation The 9th Annual Human Factors Workshop of the Transportation Research Board is scheduled for Sunday, 18 January, 1976, at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Washington, DC. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Motorists Information Systems Committee and the Road User Characteristics Committee of TRB and is under the direction of a planning committee chaired by Wallace G. Berger, BioTechnology, Inc. Six concurrent sessions will be'held, with a luncheon and post-workshop reception for all participants. The workshop topics are: Indirect measures of traffic safety Prediction and measurement of driver expectancies Optimizing the use of existing transportation rights-of-way Motorcycle safety Increasing the use of mass transit and car pooling Measurement of driver skills and knowledges
