Pump users conference 1999 The George R Brown Convention Center, Houston, Texas, is the venue of next year's 16th International Pump Users Symposium from 1 - 4 March. This prestigious 4 day conference encompasses 14 lectures, 6 tutorials, 11 discussion groups, 8 short courses and an excellent trade show, featuring more than 450 exhibit booths. The short courses are day-long presentations, which precede the symposium. Of particular interest is short course 3: Mechanical seals advanced. The lecture series begins on the Tuesday and will cover a whole host of industry problems currently facing pump users. Of particular interest are: High pressure noncontacting mechanical seal for API applications; A cavitation resistant hydrostatic seal for high pressure breakdown; Development of a twin hybrid noncontacting gas seal and its application to process pumps; Double gas seal with coplanar coaxial rayleigh pad faces for pump sealing applications; and Design and operation of a nonpressurised dual gas seal in light hydrocarbon. The discussion groups are chaired by experts, and are designed to allow people to discuss their pump problems and hopefully come up with solutions. Please note discussion group 2: Mechanical seals. Expanding Ohio facililty Recendy, two building expansion projects have taken place at Thermoseals site in Ohio, USA. This company is the exclusive licensee for the Klinger Group of companies in North America and manufactures a wide range of static sealing materials. An 18 000 ft 2 addition to the manufacturing/warehouse plant and laboratory facility has been built. This has significantly increased the manufacturing/warehouse facility, enabling the company to expand its range of sealing products. In addition, a climate-controlled manufacturing facility is currently being constructed to house the

production of its Sealex PTFE joint sealant. The company expects its completion by the end of the year and to be fully operational within the first half of 1999. The laboratory expansion now allows more extensive testing of gasket materials, particularly functional testing such as: • • • • •

Hevated temperature sealablility Pulse cycling Large flange steam and nitrogen sealability Flange blowout FSA steam sealability and chemical compatibility

The second construction project is a dedicated training facility that enables customers, engineers and specifiers to visit the company for hands on training.
