Part of the Spacelab vehicle consists of an open instrument platform, while the other part consists of an enclosed laboratory in which a team of scientists (on shifts) will carry out experiments either inside the laboratory or using the external instruments. Between flights the modular parts of the laboratory will be refurbished or exchanged as needed. The main attractions of Spacelab are : It gives an opportunity to perform experiments micro-gravity field (1 O-4 to 10 -5 g) concurrent a high vacuum (IO-’ torr).

BOC Ltd’s Cryogenic Refrigeration Systems (CRS) group has concluded a sales agreement with lntermagnetics General Corporation (IGC), Guilderland, New York, USA to market CRS’s range of helium refrigerators and liquefiers. Two world and South advancing

The European Space Agency is now making formal calls for experimental proposals. Anyone interested in Spacelab experiments should first contact Mr Frank Stern/, Materials Development Division, Harwell (Ext. 4750 or 2987) who is co-ordinating the Harwell work and any external effort that may be required and will be pleased to advise on procedure.

IGC has a worldwide reputation in the field of superconducting systems and materials. BOC, meanwhile, has gained an international reputation for advanced helium refrigerators using miniature turbo-expanders. CRS exhibited one of their standard 1 O-l 5 I. h-r helium at the 6th International Cryogenic Engineering Conference (ICEC 6) at Grenoble in May 1976.

The reliability and low maintenance of the units had led to CRS’s penetration of the international cryogenics market with export sales to West and East Germany, China, Finland, Iraq and Japan. BOC Ltd Circle number 46 on Reader Enquiry Service card

This joint European/US venture will provide an orbiting laboratory of modular construction which will be launched into orbit, and brought back some 7 to 10 days later by a NASA shuttle craft. The first flight will take place in 1980 and active planning of the equipment has begun in Europe.

THE

The National Physical Laboratory has already been holding discussions on likely UK experiments in materials science. The Science Research Council is receiving proposals for astronomical and similar experiments.

The embassy has expressed concern that UK companies are displaying products at German exhibitions which do not comply with the safety regulations and THE has been approached to give advice to UK exhibitors at overseas trade fairs, and in Germany in particular.

The Department of Industry is anxious to ensure that all UK parties who may be interested should have the chance to participate and that opportunities for bringing economic benefits to UK industries should not be missed. They have therefore asked Harwell to examine, from the viewpoint of industrial benefit, the experiments that have already been proposed, and at the same time to look at some other areas in which good scientific and technological experimental programmes could arise with the possibility of similar benefits. Examples are communications and earth resources surveys.

Two Engineers from Technical Help to Exporters (THE), the unique export advisory service of BSI, have been asked by the British Embassy in Germany to help keep British companies out of trouble at an important exhibition.

Every 3 years Achema welcomes visitors to what is probably the biggest shop window in the world for chemical engineering equipment manufacturers. This year’s Achema exhibition and conference was held in Frankfurt from 20-26 June and there were over 60 companies from Britain represented. In Germany it is illegal even to put on display a piece of equipment which does not comply with the safety regulations. If the inspectors are not satisfied, they have the authority to 303
