The blood flow waveform is generally identical in the two umbilical arteries. This is also true in cases with diastolic zero-flow and when the placenta is remarkably asymmetrical. This can bc explained by the existence of an anastomosis between the two umbilical arteries (Hyrtl’s anastomosis). Eighty-three human placentas were examined for the occurrence of HyrU’s anastomosis and classified according to its morphology. For this purpose BaSOd suspension was infused into one of the umbilical arteries post parhnn. Repeated X-ray images were taken with the umbilical cord in different positions. After fixation in formic aldehyde solution the placentas were sectioned and perpendicular images were made. In uncertain cases dissection under a stereo microscope was also performed. Hyrtl’s anastomosis oould be identified in 76 of 83 placentas. Of the remaining seven placentas three demonstrated a single umbilical artery and four demonstrated a true absence of Hyrtl’s anastomosis. No case. with more than one anastomosis was identified. No significant difference in Hyrtl’s anastomosis between placentas from AGA (average growth for age) and SGA (small growth for age) pregnancies was observed. Neither could any

correlation with umbilical artery blood flow be demonstrated.

The mutations of the rchain gene were found in patients with XSCID. Recently IL-2R7 chain is known to be shared among receptors for IL-2, IL-4 and IL-7. The expression of IL-2R7 chain uas reported on henatopoietic oells only. In this paper, we demonstrated that IL2R7 chain uas expressed on oytotrophoblast and synoytiotrophoblast by in situ hybridization. The monoclonal antibody for IL-2R7 chain bou a ~6 ohoriooaroinoma cell lines. However, the monoclonal antibody fornIL-2Ra and IL-2R/3 chain did not bound to chorioaarcinoma cell lines. We showed ohoriocarcinoma cells expressed not only IL-2R7 but also IL-4R and IL-7R mRNAby RT-PCR method. These results show IL-4 and IL-7 may promote the growth or differentiation of the trophoblast cells.
