Extruder manufacturer modifies twin screw range Berstorff is making a number of modifications to its ZE series of twin screw extruders. The company says that these include an improvement in the barrel design. A new connection system has been developed that reduces the time taken to exchange a barrel section by 60-70%, in comparison with traditional screw flange connections. In addition, the company says that the processing part of the barrel can be mounted or dismantled in sections. The new barrel design can withstand internal pressures of up to 350 bar. The heating and cooling system for the barrel segments has also been revised. The type and position of the bores for the heating/cooling agent has been optimized, which significantly increases the transferable heating or cooling capacity, says Berstorff. Development work has also been carried out to improve protection against wear in the barrel and early tests are said to be promising. Based on developments made with the previous series, all the openings on the future standard version for material feeding or degassing will be enlarged to the diameter of the extruder. This will allow higher feed rates for the ZSFE side feeder and improved degassing capacities to be obtained. Berstorffadds that a new and simplified control system has been developed for the stan-
measurement instruments, enabling the user to attain the desired quality control certifications. New driver
upgrades include the compa-
ensure instruments perform accurately,
dard version of the ZE extruder, as an alternative to a PLC and a visualization system. The company says that an industrial PC without fan can be used for control and visualization. It is available either as a compact unit (integrated into the control unit) or as a stand-alone unit (within the switch cabinet). For larger machines or lines, two PCs can be used. All machines are equipped with a 15 inch touch-screen. The software for the control and visualization can be adapted to the process set-up by a configuration manager without the need for any programming. The standard software includes standard upstream and downstream components. Additional peripheral equipment can be integrated through field-bus systems. A EUROMAP 63 protocol is available for data exchange with the master computer. Berstorff adds that the revised base frame construction means that for the ZE 60 and ZE 75, in particular, accessory units can be integrated to a large extent. As with the smaller versions in the existing series, the oil lubrication system, electrical equipment and heating/cooling unit can be installed below the drive unit or the processing section. Therefore, the extruders are supplied in a ready to use form.
