Micro-CAD Micro-CAD is the latest in a range of interactive graphic products from Surveying and Scientific Instruments Ltd. It runs on IBM, Compaq and compatible machines with a minimum configuration of 128K RAM, single 360K disc drive, an IBM colour graphics card, an asynchronous link and a GTCO MD7 digitizing tablet. It uses a tablet-activated menu which interacts with a graphics screen divided into 3 separate information sections. These sections show the working drawing, the 40 graphical layers and an illustrated function table. Micro-CAD is capable of rubber-banding, infilling, pan and zoom and autodimensioning. It costs upwards of around £650 for the software package. SSI Ltd also supply and support complete turnkey contracts. (Surveying and Scientific

Fanout unit from

BICC A fanout unit has been developed by BICC Data Networks to link up to eight devices either into an existing LAN or into a small self-contained LAN. The ISOLAN active fanout unit meets the requirements of ISO IEEE and ECMA standards. If several devices are to be connected to an existing LAN then the ISOLAN eliminates the need for a separate transceiver and drop cable for each device. Instead

survey CADCAM installations have not made the high rise in productivity expected from the use of CADCAM techniques, because they are being used for increasingly complex design problems. This is the main finding of a survey of CADCAM userscarried out by management consultants Arthur D Little. The survey also notes a divergence in the types of installations between the USA and the rest of the world; non US CADCAM users favour installations that involve only one supplier while US installations frequently involve a number of suppliers. This report is aimed at chief executives and senior engineering managers who are thinking of implementing or upgrading a CADCAM installation. It has over 90 pages and costs £350. (Arthur D Little

New st,qsportfrom Spec qraph Spectagraphics Corporation now supports two 3D mechanical design software packages, which run on Spectagraphics' System 1500 Multistation. SynthaVision is a solid modelling package from Mathematical Applications Group Inc (MAGI) and it allows the user to build a 3D model part by part from a library of primitives or user-defined superprimitives. It generates a database which can then be used to produce finished drawings. The second package is called ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems)from Mechanical Dynamics Inc. ADAMS allows modelling with interconnected joints and forces which are drawn from a library of standard functions. Once a design has been created by this method it can be viewed from any angle, in animation or frame by frame. The support for these two packages arises from Spectagraphics' Co-op Software Marketing Programme which offers independent software vendors the opportunity to jointly sell and promote their systems running on Spectagraph ics' hardware asa complete system. capability integrated with its CAEDS software package. The modeller is based upon GEOMOD produced by SDRC (Structural Dynamics Research Corporation). It uses the IBM 5080 Graphics System as an interactive workstation and offers a library of solids construction aids, including primitives, Boolean operators, rotations and extrusions. (Structural

Primagraphics have announced the launch of a new picture scanner, It is based on a high resolution CCD camera, which is linked to Primagraphic's Topaz system via an interface. The scanner has been designed to capture, store and update existing drawings, maps and greyscale pictures. It will scan any type of document (up to A2 size) with a resolution of 1720 x 2592 pixels and offers 256 levels of grey scale. The picture can then be manipulated using all the facilities available on the Topaz system.

each device is plugged into one of the eight ports in the fanout unit which then only requires one transceiver for its own connection to the LAN. The ISOLAN can also be used as a standalone device and operate as a miniLAN giving IEEE 802.3 standard networking to up to eight items of data equipment linked to it. This provides a low cost entry to Ethernet networking which can be extended into a full network later. The fanout unit automatically configures for standalone c~r network use. (BICC Data Networks
