BOOK REVIEW E'~FIatia-RedT~~~qu~,

M. F. KIMMITT. Pion

Limited (19701, 153~~. E2.50 (El.80 student edition).

Tms book is a review of experimental techniques for the far infrared; the major subject headings are optical components, sources, detectors, spectroscopic methods and far infrared experiments. The far infrared is one of the most ditlicult parts of the spectrum to investigate experimentally; the problems of removing unwanted radiation and of obtaining adequate signal to noise will be only too familiar to anyone who has worked at these wavelengths. It is, moreover, a region of increasing interest in very widely different disciplines ranging from solid-state physics to cosmology. This review of techniques has been written by one who himself has extensively practised in the field. It is very readable whiIe contaning a wealth of up-to-date information which would be invaluabie to both new and old experimenters. It can be recommended both as an introduction to the field and as a reference book. Moreover it is moderately priced. AT. HOUGHTON
