Farr Tenkay 4D ein vent units. The use of cartridge filters also kept the size down. Holliday Pigments International initially ordered three Farr bin vent units, and has since added a further three. The Farr dust collectors, which stand only 2.7 m high, have been fitted on top of large nauta mixers which blend powders to form pigments. The production of pigment powders has been carried out on the premises for more than 110 years, and the works was originally home to the famous Reckitt’s blue bags. Today, pigments are produced for industries such as plastic and rubber throughout the world. In 1990, as part of an overall plant improvement programme, the firm considered various options for

I?0 system reclaims bottle rinse water, cuts water waste in half An international soft drinks bottler contacted Osmonics for help with a water conservation problem at the bottler’s plant in El Salvador. Water is scarce in this region of Central America, and the significant water volume required in the bottling process was hampering production. By reusing water from other parts of the plant, the bottler could make up this shortfall and reduce production costs. The customer identified that the two bottle cleaner lines used the most water of all the support areas. Osmonits determined that 50% of this water could be reclaimed and reused. A system consisting of bottle washer rinse collection, cooling tower units, pH neutralisation, Western Filter pretreatment filtration with polymer feed, a reverse os-

mosis (RO) unit, permeate storage, post-chlorination and concentrate storage was proposed and installed. RO permeate water is now used for the intermediate and first-phase final rinse sections; concentrate water from the system is used for the pre-rinse section of the bottle washers and then put to drain. Potable city water is only used for the last, final rinse section. This system provides the plant with an additional 100 gal/min (380 Ilmin) of water for use in its two bottling lines, reclaiming water that otherwise would have been wasted.
