International Journal of Fatigue Publishing notes I N T E R N A T I O N A L J O U R N A L OF FATIGUE publishes contributions on all aspects of the fatigue of materials, structures and components. It is the policy of the journal to emphasize the significance of fatigue to engineering and design, and authors of contributions dealing with research work are encouraged to indicate the practical implications of their work; however, contributions dealing with the more fundamental aspects of the fatigue behaviour of materials will not be excluded. The following categories may guide authors in planning contributions: • Original papers on research or development work ( 2 0 0 0 - 4 0 0 0 words) • Research notes, describing continuing work in a particular area or the development of new equipment or techniques ( 1 0 0 0 - 1 5 0 0 words) • Review articles on particular topics (usually planned in conjunction with the Editor) • Letters to the Editor containing informal advance reports of research work or comments on previously published articles and papers. Authors wishing to make contributions should contact the editorial office at the address given below. Only papers not previously published will ordinarily be accepted. If any tables or illustrations have been published elsewhere the Editor must be informed so that the necessary permission to reproduce them can be obtained.

Copyright Before publication authors are requested to assign Copyright to Butterworth & Co (Publishers) Ltd. This allows the company to sanction reprints and photocopies and to authorise the reprint of complete Issues or Volumes according to demand. Authors' traditional rights will not be jeopardised by assigning Copyright in this manner as they will retain the right to re-use and a veto over third party publication. The appropriate Copyright Transfer Form will be sent to authors when their paper has been approved for publication.

Refereeing All major contributions are read by one or more referees before publication and may thus require amendment before final acceptance. On acceptance contributions are subject to editorial amendment.

Scripts Two copies should be submitted, typed on one side of A4 paper only, in double spacing and with wide margins. Each table should be typed on a separate page. Figure captions and table headings should be

as clear and informative as possible. Unless a typewriter for typing mathematics is available, mathematics should be written as clearly as possible by hand with Greek letters identified, the first time used, by their name in words. T w o copies of an abstract of 6 0 - 1 0 0 words should accompany each typescript. Scripts should be in English; the journal does not publish papers other than in English. Whilst articles and papers can, exceptionally, be accepted in other languages these will have to be translated and authors may be asked to contribute towards the translation costs.

Units and abbreviations SI units must be used. Temperatures should be on the Celsius (Centigrade) scale.

References References should be indicated through the text by superior Arabic numerals. The references themselves should be listed in numerical order at the end of the script on a separate sheet. References should include the authors, title of article, publication, volume number, issue number, year of publication and page number, e.g.

Ogorkiewicz, R. M, and Mucci, P. F. R. 'Testing fibre plastics composites in three point bending' Composites Vol 2 No 3 (September 1971) pp 139--145 The title of the publication should be spelt out in full and in the original language.

Illustrations Line illustrations. Articles may be published more quickly if illustrations are supplied to the required standards. However, authors should not be deterred from submitting articles merely because their illustrations do not meet the required standards, as they can be redrawn in our studio. Illustrations should be drawn in black ink on tracing cloth or paper. For lettering, Standargraph, Leroy or similar stencils should be used (template size numbers 203/3.5 and 203/2.5) using the appropriate pen sizes. Lower case (small) letters should be used throughout, with capital initial letter for the first word only (see specimen). If suitable stencils are not available, lettering should be drawn in soft pencil only and left for our studio to insert in ink in the standard style. Dimensions. Illustrations should be drawn to either 168 mm or 352 mm width, including lettering. The maximum height at drawn size should not

exceed 500mm. As all illustrations will be photographically reduced in size, lines must be drawn proportionately thicker and symbols larger than required in the printed version. The thickness of the graph grid box lines should be drawn with a number 0.3 Rotring or similar pen and the curves with pen number 0.5. Two photocopies of all drawings should be supplied in addition to the originals and the lettering should be printed in ink on these copies. Authors are asked to use a selection of the following symbols on graphs, since these are already available to the printer: X, +, A, [3, O, III, O, • Authors are asked to use the minimum amount of descriptive matter on graphs and drawings, to refer to curves, points etc by their symbols and to place descriptive matter in the caption. Scale grids should not be used in graphs, unless required for actual measurements. A table is usually more satisfactory for recording data. Photographs. Black and white glossy photographs (if not available, colour glossy photographs may be acceptable) should, where possible, be supplied

unmounted and should be labelled on the back in soft pencil with the author's name and the figure number. Two photocopies of the photographs for the referees should also be supplied. A scale, where appropriate, should always be marked on photographs or included in the figure caption. Figure captions. Captions should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Authors are urged to pack scripts carefully to avoid damage to illustrations," and note that, unless specifically requested, prints and line illustrations will not normally be returned.

Reprints No page-charges are made to authors for material published. Authors will be sent 25 run-on reprints free of charge: in the case of co-authored papers it is helpful to know to whom reprints can be sent. Additional reprints (minimum quantity 100) can be ordered at any time from the Reprints Department, Butterworth Scientific Ltd. Reprint order forms will normally be sent out with proofs.
