Felty’c syndrome

1976.

The effect of lithium carbonate upon granulopoiesis was studied in eight patients wi&~felty’s syndrome. Absolute granuktcyte counts increased in atf patients receiving 900 mg lithium carbonate daily for six weeks. Increased urinary and serum granwlocyte colony-stimulating activity was observed in all patients during lithium therapy. A causal relationship between increases in colony-stimulating activity and increased granulocytes is postulated

Sixty patients with chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) (most, in the “terminal phase” of the disease) were subjected to splenectomy because of symptomatic splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia or anemia for which they required frequent transfusions. Significant hematologic and clinical benefit was achieved in half of the patients and temporary arrest of the disease was oftan observed, but in most patients, the basic evolution of CML was not greatly altered. We COnClude that spienectomy is often a usaful palliative procedure in advanced stages of CML, and that it may be strikingly beneficial in 10 to 15 per cent of such cases.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis of importance in Latin America. Because of its polymorphic manifestations, it is not always suspected and patients are sometimes misdiagnosed. Case histories of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis are presonted in order to illustrate its various manifestations, with emphasis on the primary pulmonary localization.
