Volume 83, issue '., 15 September 1991, pp. 109114. Chloride fluxes across Acholeplasma laidlawii membranes. U. Schummer and H.G. Schiefer A few printer's errors were overlooked. The last line of p. 109 is missing. The paragraph should thus read as follows: The techniques currently used for measurements of chloride transport are patch-clamping, mieroelectrode, and 3~'CI-tracer methods. Each method has specific applications but significant restrictions. Recently, a chloride sensitive fluorescent dye, 6-methoxy-N-(sulfopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ) has been introduced by llisley and Verkman [9-11]. The fluorescence of SPQ is quenched by chloride ions and some other halides. The mechanisr.l of quenching is due to collision, i.e. the light absorbed by an SPQ molecule is transferred to a chloride ion by collision of the two molecules without radiation. The probability of collision and, correspondingly, the probability of quenching, increases with increasing concentrations of the quenching molecules. Here, with
increasing chloride concentration the fluorescence of SPQ decreases according to the SternVollmer equation: / =/,," (1 + K" [CI- ])- t, with I, the observed fluorescence intensity, 1,,, max!mum fluorescence intensity (observed in the :~hsence of CI-), K, the Stern-Vollmer constant (frequently used unit: one per tool), and [CI-], the chloride concentration. On p. 110, 3rd line of rESULTS AND DISCUSSION, the concentrations should read "1-10 mM'" instead of "'1-10 nM". On p. 11 I, sentence beginning "A plot of" (5th line from bottom of left-hand column) should read "A plot of thc change of the normalized SPQ fluorescence intensity (l,.,rL,)/(/,,-IKscN ) vs. the external .... '" On p. 112, Equation (2) should read:
i,,/I
= l-~ K*. [CI- L , .
with K*. the slope of the curve.
