All published by VDI-Verlag, Kommission Reinhaltung der Luft, Dokumentations-stelle, Postfach 1139, 4000 DUsseldorf 1, F.R.G. These bibliographies cover research topics in rapidly expanding fields. They are quite thorough. As one familiar with these topics, I could n o t find any omission over the period covered and that is already high praise. Compared to other, on-line c o m p u t e r bibliographies, they excel by containing almost no superfluous material. Most of the abstracts are relevant to the subject while, in c o m p u t e r searches, one is lucky if there are only t e n irrelevant printouts for each useful title. Nevertheless, nostalgic users of Gmelin, Beilstein and the Handbuch der Physik will involuntarily compare these bibliographies, compiled with German thoroughness, to those older classics. Comparing these titles with Gmelin, etc., is in itself already a compliment, although I hope that the following remarks will contribute to improve these bibliographies further. The titles are followed by photocopies of the abstracts, or the table o f contents, or publishers' blurbs -- whichever were available. Thus some entries are well described on half a page of small print, others in a few words only. Each volume is subdivided in ten or more systematic sections, b u t I could find no logical order within the section itself, which makes oriented search rather difficult. Thus, the reader must browse through 100 or more titles and/or abstracts to pick o u t those he will take into consideration. Unexplained abbreviations and acronyms abound. The decisive advantages over Gmelin etc., are the very much lower prices and the quick publishing, made possible by the photostatic production m e t h o d . Their esthetic shortcoming (due to the same reason) notwithstanding,

Indoor Air Quality (Luftqualitiit in Innenraumen) edited by K. Aurand, B. Seifert and J. Wegener, Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart/New York 1982 (Schriftenreihe des Vereins fu'r Wasser-, Boden- und Lufthygiene, Nr. 53), 4 4 2 p p . Price: DM 69.50 (Text mainly in German with some papers in English). The extreme importance of indoor air as an hygienic factor has already been stressed in The Science o f the Total Environment book reviews (34: 299--301). This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium organized by the Institute for Water, Soil and Air Hygiene of the German Federal Health Office, 1--2 October 1981. The 28 papers (some of which have been revised and expanded for publication) printed in this volume give an overview of the emission, modelling and effects of substances generated indoors by man himself -- by building materials, gas appliances, paints and household products, wall- and floor-covering, etc. -- as well as by fungal spores and housedust mites. Only some of the complaints of the occupants of m a n y indoor environments can be traced with any certainity to the presence of one specific pollutant. General symptoms, such as headaches and fatigue as well as irritation o f the eyes and of the respiratory tract, including allergic reactions of u n k n o w n origin, are observed which cannot y e t be related to one specific chemical. These papers might induce scientists to think of new ways to fill these gaps in our knowledge. The discussions which t o o k place among the participants of the symposium are also included.

Deposition o f Atmospheric Pollutants (Proceedings of a Colloquium held at Oberursel/Taunus F.R.G., 9--11 November 1981) edited by H.W. Georgii and J. Pankrath, D. Reidel Publishing Co., Dordrecht, Holland 1982, 217 pp. Price: DF1 85.00 (U.S.$37.00). The problem of "acid rain" has been the subject of growing concern in m a n y countries. Major international research programmes have concentrated on this topic since the early 1970's. The incorporation of pollutants into elements of cloud and rain and their transfer to the ground, called scientifically " w e t deposition" and c o m m o n l y "acid rain", is a much more complicated p h e n o m e n o n than it was earlier thought. Eleven original research papers in this volume contribute towards the understanding of the various aspects of wet deposition. Only recently has it been recognized that trees act as acid concentrators.
