Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine Paul S. Auerbach, Howard J. Donner, and Eric A. Weiss St Louis, MO: Mosby, 1999 US $37.00, 549 pages, softcover Aficionados of Auerbach’s Wilderness Medicine: Field Management of Wilderness and Environmental Emergencies text will want the Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine in their backpack. It is, essentially, a handy, user-friendly, packable, abridged version of Wilderness Medicine, the definitive source for the practice of wilderness medicine. The handbook is full of useful tables and illustrations of everything from reduction and splinting techniques to proper removal of embedded fishhooks. The recommendations for travel immunizations and for different types of wilderness medical kits include valuable reminders for any expedition physician. The rabies postexposure prophylaxis recommendations will certainly be updated in future versions. The editors could probably scale down the number of pages by editing out rarely needed ‘‘field’’ information, such as treatment of tularemia or rat bite fever, but, in summary, this text is invaluable for physicians traveling into wilderness areas. Will I carry this book on my next trip to Nepal? You bet! Better yet: it would be great if it were available for download onto a PDA! Luanne Freer, MD Bozeman, MT, USA
