In GB 2297701 Tandem Products Inc describes a filter sector for use in rotary disc filter systems . Th is filter bag support comp rises a spaced pair of metallic struc tu ral members formed of expanded metal , with a number of openings , and a non-metallic coating covering the metallic structural members. The filter sector may also include reinforcing ri bs, a frame, and a mechan ism for attaching the filter sector to a rotary disc filter system . In addition , the structural members may be formed of a non-metallic or metallic material , where the structural members are permanently or removably attached to the filter sector frame. In GB 2297704 Zeneca Ltd descri bes how a set of similar compounds are separated into fractions by counter-current chromatography. Two examples are given. The separation of tr is am ino triazines is performed in a solvent system conta in ing isohexane:ethyl acetate :methano I:w at e r: tr iethylamine in the proport ions 2:1:2:1:0.06. Also, the separation of alkylated cysteine derivatives uses a solvent system of isohexane:ethyl acetate:methanol:water in the proportions 1:1:1:1. In each case a planetary coil apparatus was used . Inventors : R.E. Shute and B.G. Main , Date of publication : 14 August 1996.

Separation and recovery of self-adhesive composite material In G8 2298377 DaimlerBenz AG describes a meth od for the single-type recovery of plastic materials from starting pieces of a multiple composite material. The process is used for the recovery of pieces of prep reg fabric from flexible cutt ing residues, in which prepreg webs or similar self-adhesive webs are lined with films on both sides . Comminuted compos ite pieces are fed into a cooling region ; the coolant is water, optionally conta i ning antifreeze . The pieces are subjected to bend ing and shea ring stress by rollers, and are fed into a separation region . Gas is passed through a porous plate, and the com ponents accumulate bubbles ; because of the different densities of the components , the films float to the surface while the pieces of fabr ic sink onto an ai r-permeable discharge bel t. Inventors: R. Greiner, M. Melchiorre and 8. Stuckrad, Date of publication : 4 September 1996. Purillcation of exhaust gases In G8 2298590 Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd desc ribes a method of and apparatus for purifying exhaust gas. The rate of heat generation as a result of the combustion reaction of the particulate matter is suppressed, and is made less than the rate of heat reduction . Thus the abrupt temperature rise of 'ignition' is prevented , and t he temperature grad ient in the filter is made small , thereby preventing unduly high temperatures from developing. In this way cracking of the filter as well as damage to the filter resulting from melting can be prevented, thereby enhancing the reliab il ity. To achieve this , the whole filter is heated in such a way that the temperature rise rate is not more than 10°C/minute

when the temperature in the filter is between 400°C and 600°C . In the case where the filter carries an oxidising catalyst, the heating is effected in such a manner that the temperature ri se rate is not more than 10°C/minute between 200°C and 400°C. Inventors: K. Fukuda , K. Shoj i, Y. Kuwamoto and K. Sakanoue, Date of publication: 11 September 1996. Filter elements In GB 2298591 Tenmat Ltd describes a porous filter element. It comprises an elongated , hollow structure wh ich is closed at one end, arranged so that the gases to be cleaned , possi bly at high temperatures, permeate to the interior of the element before passing through. The other, open end of the structure is fabricated from a slurry includi n g particles of an anhydrous crystalline mineral of ac icular form , such as Wollastonite , employ i ng known vacuumform ing techniques . The mineral particles should preferably have an aspect ratio of at least 10:1. The increased strength and porosity of such materials enable the filter element to have re-entrant crosssectional shape, for example a multi-pointed star. Inventor: B.T. Lloyd, Date of publication: 11 September 1996. Treatment of gas from a diesel plant In G8 2298592 TNSW Thyssen Nordseewerke GmbH describes an apparatus for the treatment of circuit gas from a circulatory diesel plant. In a diesel plant with exhaust gas circulation , the exhaust gas is cleaned of carbon dioxide by passing it through sea water in an absorber. The washed gas is then separated from its water content and from its soot content by separation and filtration, respectively. Here , a combined separator and filter is proposed in wh ich , after removal of the water, the soot-contaminated gas passes rad ially

outwards through a filter insert. The insert is rotatable , and can be washed by spraying clean wate r through it in a radial inward direction using a spray bar w ith the filter being rotated , for example by hand , past the spray bar. Inventor: F. Meyer: Date of publication : 11 September 1996. Filter elements In G8 2299031 Pall Corporation describes a filter element which comprises a filter medium incorporated into an assembly made of plastic components. At least one plastic component is treated to produce mar kings with a colour different to the colour of the plastic material. It i s preferable that at least one of the components incorporates titanium dioxide as a filler. The treatment of such a component with a laser pro duces a dark pigment w ithin the component, and thus can be used to form characters on the component to convey informati on regarding the filter element such as product part number, lot code, serial number and flow arrow. Inventor: G.B. Peacock, Date of publication: 25 September 1996. Filter disc In GB 2299032 Haver & Boecker describes a filter disc which comprises two outer gauze filter layers, an intermediate gauze filter set and an outlet ring wh ich bounds a central outlet bore . The two opposite endfaces of the ring are formed by a number of spaced surfaces which are formed by parts projecting alternately towards the two faces. These parts bound outlet channels which are present between the surfaces and which, by virtue of their mode of format ion, have relatively large flow cross-sections to permit easier outflow of viscous fluids. The ring can be a pressed metal componen t. Inventor : W. Schne ide r , Date of publication : 25 September 1996.
