FINAL DISCUSSION TOPICS OF FUTURE RESEARCH The participants proposed a number of topics which, in their opinion, most urgently need further treatment. These include
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (vii) (viii)
a quantitative, worldwide estimate of the economic losses caused by B. tabaci the density--damage relationship and the establishment of economic thresholds the within--plant distribution of the whitefly population in different crops and the refinement of sampling methods the year-to-year fluctuations of whitefly density the migration from one crop to the next t h r o u g h o u t the year the identification of parasites f o u n d in the field the host-plant relationships with special reference to resistance the genetics of B. tabaci and its parasites and the occurrence of biotypes in both of them.
An order of priority between these topics was not established. HOW TO PROCEED IN THE FUTURE Participants agreed that further contact between the scientists who work on B. tabaci is highly desirable. Professor Gerling proposed that a newsletter on B. tabaci should be established whose first aim should be to list or summarize the latest literature on this pest. Everybody who has published papers in this field should send a list of t h e m to Ohnesorge who will collect the items and put them into the first issue. Also, if somebody wants information on a specific topic, e.g. parasites o f B. tabaci, he should let the others know through this newsletter. Finally, regional meetings and/or conferences on B. tabaci ought to be brought to the knowledge of the others in the same way. The newsletter will be distributed according to a mailing list into which all interested people can enter their address. The next step could then be another meeting in a couple of years.
