Intermetallic reference A new volume edited by J.H. Westbrook and R.L. Fleischer is published by Wiley. Volume 3 of Intermetallic Compounds: Principles and Practice comprises contributions from 72 authors and covers subjects from intermetallic families to properties and phenomena to applications, practical processes, and new research techniques. This volume features stand-alone chapters accessible to non-specialists and definitions of the different intermetallic families. Chapters on current research activity together with references to the latest literature and an acronym list are also included. ISBN: 0471-49315-5 Publication: November 2001 Hardback, pp. 1056 Price: $485 / £325

Detection reaches summit Dionex Corporation launches the UVD 340U Photodiode Array Detector for use its their Summit™ high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) products. This high-resolution detector with low noise and drift provides sensitive readings from 200-595 nm and uses CHROMELEON™ chromatography software to provide detector control, spectral overlays, three-dimensional plotting, library searches, and peak purity analyses. The UVD 340 is ideal for low-flow applications, as well as systems coupled to mass spectrometers. For applications that involve analytical and preparative

Hotplates and stirrers Schott releases a new range of hotplates and stirrers. The SLK 1 and SLK 2 hotplates offer heating power of 1.2 kW and 1.8 kW, respectively, with an optional temperature sensor available for the SLK 2T version. This allows temperature controlled heating between 35°C and 199°C with the actual and set temperatures monitored on an LED display. The SLR offers separately controlled stirring and heating so that liquids can be mixed at varying speeds and temperatures. The SLK 6 offers more flexibility, combining a heating plate on one side with a hotplate and stirrer on the other. All Schott hotplates and stirrers comply with international quality standards and the CERAN® glass ceramic heating surfaces are resistant to chemicals and temperature shocks of more than 700°C. Spillages can be wiped off the pore-free flat surfaces and infrared touch-control means that cleaning and servicing are kept to a minimum. Contact: www.schott.com

separations, the semi-preparative cell option can be installed. The combination of advanced fraction collection features in CHROMELEON™ and versatile control outputs for fraction collectors also makes the UVD 340 suitable for scale-up. A complete set of qualification, documentation, and electronic signature features makes the UVD 340 compliant with good laboratory or manufacturing practice (GLP and GMP) and the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR Part 11). High-res scientific camera BFi OPTiLAS introduces the new megapixel CCD (charged coupled device) camera from QImaging Corporation for general scientific use. Designed for high-resolution brightfield microscopy and industrial applications, the progressive scan interline CCD sensor gives a resolution of 1.4 million pixels in 10-bit digital output. The QICAM is supplied with QCapture image capture software and plug-ins for Image Pro Plus, Express, and Adobe PhotoShop for PCs. For Mac users,

compatible with vacuum manifolds such as the FlashVac® and VacMaster®.

the QICAM Image System (including Improvision’s Openlab Darkroom software) is available. The FireWire ™ IEEE 1394 digital interface with one single wire connection between camera and computer is easy to use and install, and no framegrabber or additional power supply is required. Frame rates of up to 100 fps can be achieved and a C-mount is provided for easy mounting on microscopes or use in industrial applications. A removable IR cut-off filter is supplied, but is easily removed for IR applications, and the QICAM is available in monochrome or Bayer Mosaic color models.
