First meeting: ‘‘Latin American Network on Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious Diseases (LAN-MEEGID)’’ La Paz, Bolivia, 25th–27th April 2012

This workshop has been held under the auspices of: (i) IINSAD (Instituto de Investigación y Salud y Desarollo), a Bolivian institute that pertains to the faculty of medicine (Universidad Mayor de San Andrè- UMSA) in La Paz; (ii) Representative office in La Paz of IRD (French Institut de Recherche pour le Développement); (iii) Cultural services of the French Embassy in La Paz. It has been sponsored by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the IRD Direction de l’information et de la culture scientifiques pour le Sud (DIC). It has been hosted by the French-Bolivian Lycée in La Paz, which provided a fine 250-seat auditorium and an additional room for simultaneous symposia. Main organizers were Dr Eddy Martinez (IINSAD), Drs Jenny Telleria and Michel Tibayrenc (French Institut de Recherche pour le Développement). 22 plenary lectures and 6 simultaneous symposia have been animated by a total of 46 speakers. The total number of attendees exceeded 100. Bolivian delegates came not only from La Paz, but also from the provinces of Beni, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Chuquisaca (Sucre). matosis, schistosomiasis), viral (dengue, HIV, yellow fever) diseases, insect vectors (mosquitoes, triatomine bugs) and human genetics. In the concluding remarks, it has been decided to settle an international collaborative network for research on genetics and evolution of infectious diseases in Latin America (LAN-MEEGID: Latin American Network for Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious diseases). It will be actually a network of networks, since local networks are already operated by some delegates of the workshop. Specialized reference teams and correspondents in each country have been or will be identified. Although the scientific focus of the network deals infectious diseases in Latin America, it will include also North American and European teams that have a strong expertise in this field. The next meeting of the network will be held at the PUCE (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador) in Quito, Ecuador, 22–23 July 2014. The meeting will be hosted by Prof. Mario Grijalva, from the PUCE, and chaired by Prof. Grijalva, Prof. Francisco J. Ayala, professor of Evolution at the University of California in Irvine, member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and myself.
