Book Reviews Hennessen, W. (ed.), Fish Biologics: Serodiagnostics and Vaccines, xii + 490 pp., illus. Karger, Basel, 1981 This book, Vol. 49 of the Developments in Biological Standardization series, contains proceedings of a symposium organized by the International Association of Biological Standardization and held in April 1981 at the National Fish Health Research Laboratory in Leetown, WV, U.S.A. The papers are grouped in 7 sessions. In sessions I and II the uses of serological methods in identifying fish viral and bacterial pathogens respectively are dealt with, III is devoted to related topics such as antisera preparation, IV and V are concerned with the properties of fish immune responses and the environmental factors influencing them, VI includes presentations on the preparation, testing and use in fishes of specific vaccines, and VII consists of summaries and conclusions. Among the methods discussed in I and II indirect immunofluorescence appears to be widely accepted for virus identification while enzyme immunoassay is favoured next to haemagglutination and immunofluorescence in the diagnosis of fish bacterial infections. An interesting aspect of the discussion of fish immunity is the analysis of the contribution of antibodies versus non-specific humoral factors to protection from pathogens. As far as the development of vaccines is concerned, a number of bacterins are available commercially and they have been successfully tested. In contrast, a commercial production of viral vaccines for fishes was not achieved up to the time of the symposium, but possibilities for its realization were discussed therein. The text is followed by the list of participants, index of speakers, and a subject index. As an account of the first immunological standardization symposium devoted to fishes, this volume deserves the attention of fish health specialists as well as those engaged in fish farming, a rapidly developing branch of modern agriculture.
