The Edwards S. 150 carbon evaporation accessory.

N e w Edwards v a l v e A new solenoid-operated air admittance valve, the Edwards PVA5E, occupies less than half the space of the equipment it supersedes and provides the same facilities, for lower cost. This is achieved through use of a small built-in rectifier which enables the valve to be operated from ac supplies. The previous model could only be operated on ac current via an independently mounted rectifier which had to be purchased separately. The PVA5E can be operated from ac or dc current with equal facility simply through choice of appropriate terminals. It opens when de-energized and thus provides vacuum systems with automatic air or gas admission in the event of power failure. The valve is supplied complete with the latest SC5 couplings and can be connected to pipelines by brazing or soldering or "muff" coupled with the addition of a compression ring accessory. It is suitable for use with 6 mm external dimeter tube and when open gives a typical leak time to atmosphere of 10 I. in 12 s. Edwards High Vacuum, Manor Royal, Crawley, Sussex RH10 2LW, UK

Flexible high vacuum connectors Stokes have recently introduced a range of convoluted, flexible, stainless steel bellow connectors for every high vacuum application. Designed to a high tolerance Stokes flexible connectors give years of trouble free service and case alignment problems reducing to a minimum transmitted vibration from other equipment. Available in sizes from 1½ to 12 in. dia., the standard range is supplied with both ends flanged, ASA standards but a combination of sealing faces are available, i.e. both ends piped, flanged one end piped the other or with welding bands. N e w hot pump from Stokes Stokes announce details of a new range of vacuum pumps designated Series H.33 "Hot Pumps' with displacement of 150 and 300 CFM. They are designed for operation where large quantities of water or low-boiling solvents must be removed under vacuum conditions, including vacuum distillation, flash film distillation and vacuum drying of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, vacuum impregnation of electronic or electrical components or applications in the petro-chemical field. The New Stokes Hot Pump meets the need for maximum water handling capability of a broad absolute pressure range of 0.1 torr to full atmosphere, w i t h o u t need of auxiliary condensers. Hot Pumps are so called because they run with lubricants above 100 °C. Water vapour is exhausted into the 304

F l a m e p r o o f / w e a t h e r p r o o f pressure switches Actuated Controls Ltd are n o w offering the PROCESS range of pressure switches in BASEEFA approved flameproof and weatherproof enclosures. These enclosures conform to BS 4683, are suitable for use with gases in Groups IIA and liB. The enclosure is normally manufactured in cast iron and is fully weatherproof which makes it suitable for use under the most arduous operating conditions, many units having been installed on petrochemical plants, oil refineries, North Sea drilling rigs and production platforms. A unique feature of the ACTU flameproof design is that the pressure sensing element and the dial that

housing, all electrics, i.e. switch and terminals, are in the upper flameproof and weatherproof housing. This means that it is not necessary to enter the top flameproof and weatherproof housing after initial electrical connections have been made; all adjustments of set pressures can be carried out in the lower weatherproof housing w i t h o u t the need to open the flameproof section with all its attendant problems.

c v c Scientific Products Ltd have introduced a new solid state ion-thermocouple gauge available in t w o versions--the type GIC-400 with analogue meter readout providing six linear decade ranges for normal selection and the type GIC-405 with digital readout and automatic ionization range switching. Both are fitted with a new high performance ionization sensor capable of working from 2 × 10 -9 to 10 -~ torr. The thermocouple section, employing one or t w o sensors as required, extends the pressure indicating range from 10 -3 to 5 torr. Separate meters and circuit recorder outputs are provided for obtaining hard copy. Other features include automatic emission reduction on high pressures, automatic over-pressure cut-off with relay contacts for external use, push-button circuit actuators and provision for remote filament control. Both units are designed for 115/230 V, 50/60 Hz operation and can be used either on a bench or mounted in a standard 19 in. rack cabinet. connectors

CompAir Maxam announces the Super Speedfit advanced design push-fit tube couplings. Each miniature unit is ideal for fast assembly of piped control systems. Each lightweight fitting comprises a three-piece assembly--a zinc body, a nitrile 'O' ring seal and an acetal tube-holding collet fitted with a specially designed stainless steel retaining ring giving a reliable and strong joint. The range is suitable for systems piped in nylon, copper and many of the softer metals, accepting most makes of metric tubing to be found in piped control systems. These miniature couplings will be available in a variety of joint designs and offered in sizes suitable for 4 . 5 , 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm tubing. The unique tube gripping design allows the 4, 5 and 8 mm fittings to grip 3--~=,~-~ and ~ in. tubes. Super Speedfit requires no special tools. Prior to connection, the tube must be cut cleanly at right angles, then simply pushed into the assembly. As the tube passes into the collet the retaining ring and seal provide a very strong connection, protects against possible flow leakage up to 10 bar operational pressure, Dismantling is also very fast, by pushing the collet in towards the zinc body with finger pressure, the tube can be easily removed from the coupling. CVC's inexpensive

plasmasource

accessory

Plasma Enriched Deposition (PED) is n o w available to manufacturers of thin-film devices at relatively low cost as a result of the introduction of CVC Scientific Products' new magnetically enhanced sputtering accessory--PlasmaSource 800. PlasmaSource 800 consists of an 8 in. dia sputtering electrode assembly, which can be easily and quickly installed in the baseplate of any belliar vacuum system, and a power supply suitable for bench mounting or for installation in a 19 in. rack cabinet. PED deposition is gaining wide recognition in the thin-film industry because of its ability to significantly improve product quality and reduce process costs. Extremely high deposition rates can be achieved by means of PED sputtering. A coating of aluminium 5000 A thick can be laid d o w n in 1 min at a power input of 3.6 kW. Copper is deposited at rates as high as 10,000 A/min. PED's other advantages include excellent film adhesion, precise control of film composition and thickness, reduced heating of the substrate and fewer pinholes. Diagnostic

high vacuum

gauge

vacuum-gauge

A new diagnostic vacuum gauge the A N A V A C - 2 can measure the partial pressure of any component gas in a vacuum system, as well as total system pressure. The compact detector head, a quadrupole mass analyser, enables the gas concentration at any selected mass number from 2 (hydrogen) up to 60 to be rapidly measured. Individual component analysis is achieved by simply dialling the component on the control unit, the measured output being displayed on an integral meter or recorded as concentration against time on a separate chart recorder. To provide a complete analysis of residual gases present, the w h o l e mass range or any part of it may be electronically scanned. A rear-panel outlet for a chart recorder a~lows the resulting 'fingerprint' spectrum to be recorded. One advantage of the instrument is that it can distinguish different causes of excessive pressure--which need not be due to an air leak. The highly sensitive instrument can measure total pressures from around 10 -4 mbar d o w n to 5 x 10-~2 mbar and is therefore suitable both for industrial processes and for ultra-high vacuum research applications. The lightweight units (total weight 5½ kg) may either be built into the vacuum equipment or carried in a briefcase by a service engineer. A pressure-limiting trip is fitted as standard : this protects the instrument from damage when the pressure exceeds the setting and can operate an external relay to provide process-control protection. The instrument has a Faraday-plate collector which is immune to vacuum contamination and high-pressure operation. An LED display on the front panel indicates range changing when switching between partia~ and total pressure. VG-Gas Analysis Limited, Nat Lane, Winsford, Cheshire CW7 3QH, UK

Axial shaft seals A range of inexpensive low-pressure metric-sized axia~ shaft seals which can operate at peripheral speeds up to 30 m/s while exhibiting l o w co-efficient of friction and minimum temperature rise, has been introduced in Britain. Because the sealing lip is applied axially to a rotating face normal to the axis, there is no need to harden and polish the circumference of the shaft. The seals are esy to fit, require little space and have an extended service life. Working temperatures at the sealing face may range from - 4 0 ° C to +250°C. Manufacturers are Hirsohmann of West Germany. 305
